What is a good or common grocery list for you when you shop for vegetarian or vegan items? I almost always have fake burgers and chicken nuggets on my list and fresh or frozen veggies.
This is pretty vague, but other than our baking supplies things that I make a point of keeping on hand are: * Various in-season raw fruits & veggies * Potatoes; red, russet, gold and/or sweet * Soymilk & Earth Balance "butter" * Frozen mukimame, (shelled soybeans) various broccoli mixes & "stir fry" veggies * Ready-made bottles or fresh ingredients for Asian sauces & Mexican Salsas * Several kinds of beans and canned diced tomatoes (when tomatoes aren't in season) * Canned fruit (during the winter when we're tired of apples & pears) and applesauce * Brown & wild rice and a few types of pasta * Black olives * And pretzels, corn chips or some other "crunchy carb" food love, mom
Lists are for the mentally challenged. I shop freestyle! Boca ground burger is always a given. About two boxes a month. Gardenburgers are excellent too. Onions. Love white onions. Red onions are also most excellent raw in a sandwich or salad. Pasta. I prefer Italian if I can get it. Pasta sauce. Whatever good quality stuff is avalable. I stir in the boca and simmer for a couple of hours. Garlic. Life would suck without garlic. Don't you think? Salsa. Love peach mango salsa. It almost has me speaking in tongues just thinking about it. Always keep salsa on hand. Herdez is excellent for the canned stuff. Made in Mexico. Tabasco sauce. There is only ONE. Cheese. I buy a block of extra sharp cheddar. American cheese for sandwiches. I keep about a half dozen different kinds of cheese on hand at any given time. Like the smoked stuff too. I get smoked Mozz. out of northern California. Rumiano brand. Smoked for 100 hours. Best cheese I've ever tasted. I melt it on top of english muffins for breakfast. Potatoes. Russets for frying or baking. Red for cooking in dishes. Always on the lookout for interesting spices. Always have a couple dozen on hand. Sage is a favorite. Cornmeal. I'm from the south, and therefore addicted to cornbread. Dried beans. Same reason. Cooking oil. Regular ol soybean for general purpose. Olive oil. Extra virgin everytime. Anything else is a waste of money. I use it extensively. Flour tortillas. Can of refried beans. I can make a burrito at the drop of a hat. Tomatoes. Usually eaten raw, but Italian baked tomatoes with breadcrumbs are to die for. Always got to have maters. No question about it. I troll the day old bread rack at the store too. Love 9 grain bread. Natural peanut butter. Just hand me a spoon. x

this is a list I posted on a different board: you cannot let your cupboard go bare as a new veg. you MUST get a stocked pantry. my basics are: brown rice pasta (some whole wheat, some not) canned fire roasted tomatoes canned and dried beans (I have a pressure cooker, so cans are for really lazy nights) lentils flour corn meal salsa TVP: I had Fantastic Foods' sloppy joe and taco mix for years, but I have forced myself to learn how to work with the cheaper TVP hummus mix (or extra cans of chickpea/garbanzo) two packages of veggie burgers (or six homemade ones) tortillas frozen veggies (green beans, broc, greens when not in season) carrots onions garlic potatoes in season fruit frozen fruit lemons and limes Tofu: I buy maybe a pound every six weeks. red bell peppers: I get them on sale, roast and freeze some get left plain because I like to munch on them. I'm not a green pepper fan. I keep a few hot chilies around, but I spice everything up. I have enough spices to stock an ethnic grocery plus salt and pepper mustards pickles cilantro chutney tamarind chutney other condiments you like I keep small amounts of medium and sharp Tillamook cheese. I automatically freeze half (which will crumble upon thawing, enough that I can melt it really easily) I keep Pepper Jack for my Sweetie (omni) because I THINK it has animal rennet. I need to double check, as I liked it. I also keep plain yogurt (a locally made company, without gelatin)
Wow, those are some good things to have. Do you get most of it from a co-op or local grocer? Or does the chain grocery carry some of that stuff, too?
I don't personally do the shopping, but I make sure we have: Coffee or Chai tea Vegetable burgers or fingers Some veggie mince Lots of fruit and veg I like At least one kind of vegetable microwave meal for emergencies some seeds or dried fruit multivitamins
I always plan my meals in advance, and then buy all the ingredients I need, but I always have on hand - pasta - rice - Asian noodles (soba usually) - tinned tomatoes and various beans and pulses (usually chickpeas, red kidney beans, lentils) - cheese - frozen stirfry veg - stir fry sauces, chutneys, marinades, curry pastes - all the common spices (ground cumin, coriander, turmeric, chilli, garam masala, dried herbs, etc) - coconut milk As far as fresh veggies go, I always have garlic and onions on hand, but I usually buy all my other veg depending on what I'm cooking during the week. I find this saves a lot of wastage.
