Oh man, I'm in the process of starting my dreads tonight. It's been so long and I've only done 2 "dreads." I think I'm being way to picky. I plan on having them for years and years though so thats why I'm being so careful and cautious. I have a question! How did yr guys' look the first few days? I DEFINITLY KNOW that they're not suppose to look amazing, I understand it takes a year to even look like dreadlocks. I'm just asking so I don't feel so alone, haha. I don't know anyone with dreadlocks so all this is so new to me.

I'm not using wax. I choose not to use any product, whatsoever. I washed my hair with a residue free soap and I plan on getting Dr.Bronners this week.
I feel like I'm backcombing wrong. Gah!

    Thanks for reading!

I know its freaky at first, but it should be stressed:
Your hair is gonna look like shit for at least a year. No matter what you do. Thats ok though.
During that time, you'll get alot of insight from the way people react to you.
There is no backcombing wrong. All backcombing is, is putting knots in your hair. You could do this with your fingers if you wanted.

I know it's going to look pretty bad for a long time but I'm ready and totally okay with that. :]
Yr so right, I knew I was freaking out way too bad.
    Haha!
My hair is shortening drastically, but thats okay. In a few years, I'll look back and be very thankful.

dont worry! my head looked like those fussy little tent caterpillars (not sure if you get those where you live but theyre weird). i dont have a pic, but it looked stupid. and i did a crap job, escpecially in the back. then it all fell out. now, some of my awesomest and randomest dreads are in the back. everything lookes and feels so different from when i started. the locking up of my hair never ceases to amaze me.

hey riot.. i just got my dreads and i did few dreads a day.. finishing it today (4th day)
i asked my brother, sister, mom, everyone to help me... they kept saying they would help me but they didnt at all... so now my dreads are not the way i wanted to be since i dreaded myself..
and just like wanderin said, i had a very hard time getting the back done.... but im not even worrying cuz you're not supposed to!! time will dread em better and i'll keep maintaining them with crochet hook, backcomb or anyway..
im in the 4th day and didnt wash it yet... and i think I wont wash them for a week or even more since its winter over here
i believe it helps... and before getting it i've been washing my hair with dr.bronners for 2 weeks(preparing my hair to get rid of residues)

    ya dont worry..
    shit i wrote too much
    peace

hey no worries, mine are only starting to look good now and I did the same as you.
mine are just over 3 months old, with a few that formed by themselves and they are a little older.

Just be patient and keep your hair nice and clean ( obviously dont wash EVERY day, but mebbe once a week will do the job)

Haha, my sister did the same thing. It sucked! But I used my mothers bathroom that has 3 mirrors so it wasn't hard.
I heard yr suppose to keep the hair clean. If it's clean and dry they'd knot better, the oil form yr head makes them harder to loop. Thats what I heard.
I plan on keeping my hair clean.
Hows that Dr.Bronners? I bought some today in peppermint and it smells delicious! :]

Nah, you didn't write too much! Thanks for the reply!
