I'm looking for some suggestions for "boy" books. With my job, I have to go into the schools and talk books to 6th & 7th graders, which is awesome. But, I am a girl, I don't have any boy children and I have been told that most of the books I choose are too girly. Anyone have any great books that boys will enjoy that have been published in the last year or two?

Try Bookadventure.com and also ask some boys! You might also ask your young adult department librarian.

The Giver is good around 5-6 grades.

Ender's Game is always a winner for both sexes but it's a long book. They are finally working on a movie btw.

You might also check out this site:

At the end of the pages are the older boy books and a list of resources for more ideas.

I am familiar with those books, however, I have to choose books that have been published in the last 2 years. Our YA librarian is such a ditz--he's pretty clueless on all accounts.
Anyway, thanks for the sites, I will check them out.

I got "The Dangerous Book For Boys", not a novel but a lot of fun. Good for Dad's, too.

We put the Dangerous Book in the YA library. It was a bit too dangerous for younger kids in our uptight community.

Well, if they start first grade at six years old, they should be 12-13 in grades 6 and 7. However, these days most boys have already been held back in 5-K for a year.

My son is 14 and in grade 9. He'll be 15 by the end of the year.

You should check out "The Doctor's Bag" by John Schlarbaum. This is a fabulous easy to read book dealing with a boy's relationship with his father, that has many useful life lessons within the storyline. It is also a great book about a parent's unconditional love for their child - boy or girl.

On the website there are many Reader's Reviews about the story: www.scannerpublishing.com.

    You won’t be disappointed!

Here’s a review from The Midwest Book Review:

The Doctor's Bag: A Sentimental Journey is the heartwarming tale of the life of Thomas Sterling and his son Robert. Readers will become enthralled with The Doctor's Bag as the intimate story between father and son unfolds, giving new meaning to the actual doctor's bag itself. As the doctor's bag acts as the metaphor between healing and pain from year to year, The Doctor's Bag leaves the reader with an enlightening message of life, love and hope. The Doctor's Bag is strongly recommended to the general reader and those searching for a gentle, touching, and life changing read.

    I hope this helps!

Too bad this is an old thread. I'll still put my input though. I went to a conference on literature for children and adolescents. One of the speakers was an author, Jack Gantos, and he was incredibly funny. He writes for all age groups.

Do they have to have been published in the last year or two?
Jeez! There are so many great books I could recommend from when I was younger but those are definitely not newcomers to the book world.

Yes, the Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series is great for either gender...they're a YA fantasy fiction series with three books published of an anticipated six book run
    Enjoy!
