It depends what you want, the genre is pretty wide despite what a lot of people think at a glance

songs about niggaz n gunz n murder

shitty modern songs about going to clubs or other shit

    chilled laid back G-Funk songs

    fast paced rapid flow songs

hardcore & aggressive songs about politics and other issues

    spiritual songs

I could keep listing things but really you have to say what style youre looking for before anyone can recommend any artists

for me the best dance hip hop would be electro-funk or electro-hop from the 80's

these days its all crunk and snap music and stuff which I'm not really into, so if thats what youre after just look at a top 40 chart, it seems to be full of it

I got a suggestion, Them old school funky cats, at Stones Throw Records, founded by Peanut Butter Wolf. Madvillian, M.F. Doom and Madlib Collab, MF, formerly Zev Love X of K.M.D in the early 90's, Some Old School Funky Cool shit.. Keep it on the Hush Hush though, this stuffs better on the underground.

youre gonna need: all of tupac's records/ biggies "ready to die" and "life after death"/g-Units "Beg For Mercy"/ "College Dropout" by Kanye/ and "The Message" by Grandmaster Flash and The Furious 5. that should about cover it.

I'd recommend Bone Thugs and Harmony. I'm new to rap too.... Bone thugs have a wide variety of beats that I really enjoy.

    Yeah East 99 is great

Stay away from their solo stuff unless you're already a fan though

Bizzy's solo albums are certainly an.. acquired taste.. I enjoy them, but you really have to know what you're getting into

Jurassic 5 are about the easiest to get into if you are starting out. Then move onto the golden age stuff: Eric B & Rakim, EPMD, KRS-One, Tribe, Main Source, etc. Then move on to the modern underground stuff like Edan, Sage Francis, Aesop Rock, Quasimoto, MF Doom etc.

there are two sites your should check out datpiff.com lots of good hip hop mixatpes
and a new site launching called wyplanet they say

The future of music is digital music distribution 2.0. Ad supported publishing that allows content creators to provide free music while sharing in ad and sponsor revenue. I have heard a lot of indies are planning to publish there in many genres
