Saturday 24th November is Buy Nothing Day! Take a holiday from consumerism for 24 hours. http://www.buynothingday.co.uk/
Buy Nothing Day is just another manifestation of US cultural hegemony. It's timed to coincide with the weekend after Thanksgiving, which is the traditional start of the Xmas shopping season (unlike here, where it's been in full swing for weeks).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Friday_(shopping) You're right, it's "Black Friday" today in the States; so much for cultural imperialism, they even export their anti-capitalist protests! Still it's a good idea.
I only buy what i need anyway, with the very rare extra luxury. We make lots ourselves out of things we have already or stuff we got on freecycle, and its damn good fun i dont understand the whole buy buy buy bits of plastic thing, annoys the hell out of me
do you have an easy time with the freecycle in your area? seems the one in my area you have to always be giving stuff to ever receive anything, which i think defeats part of the purpose at least, as unfortunately not everyone has 'extra' things that they can give. just curious. i would give some stuff away if i could get replacements first. like our current coffee table is HUGE and i need a smaller one, and I'd give the old one away, but i can't give it away till i get a smaller one. *grr* and about the bits of plastic, don't talk to my hubby (he's an avid transformers collector) hehe. yep, today is Black Friday. bit disappointed my family didn't call me for Thanksgiving, even though I dont' celebrate over here, it is still nice to be remembered. and as far as not buying stuff goes, i do that most days out of the year anyway.
Buy Nothing Day was hyped in a few alternative publications and websites, but it was NEVER even mentioned on MSM before, during or after. In fact, just the opposite happened. The MSM hyped the Black Friday message and told everyone to go shopping! In fact it was SO OVERHYPED, it had to be a coverup to ensure that people DIDN'T stop shopping to protest. Yet another HUGE disservice to humanity by not even mentioning the fact that thousands if not millions of people were boycotting buying anything on that day to protest the Rampant Consumerism that is DEVOURING our planet!
