May I have some recommendations on which hotel chains – in Amsterdam or Haarlem – are good about offering and accepting corporate discounts? I’ll check with my company’s leisure travel department after the holiday break: I work for a huge international company. I once walked into the Hanoi InterContinental, and by simply showing my business card, I received 60% off the rack rate! (And I wasn't even on business, but the hotel didn't care.)

Your best option is to find out if your company has had any dealings with hotels within The Netherlands..And take it from there..

As it turns-out, my company has four preferred hotel chains in AMS. They include the Marriot, Hilton, and the Crown Plaza. My company’s preferred hotels per city are based on a formula that includes what my company has going on – from a business perspective -- at any given city in the world.

I could have stayed at a very nice place; I forget which one, on the Amstel for about 280e/night instead of something like 370e/night. And even better rates if I wanted to stay near the airport.

But staying in those types of hotels, in a city like Amsterdam, isn’t worth it to me – I learned that the expensive way! But like I mentioned, about 8-years ago I got a 60% discount off the rack rate at the oldest, most historic, and very nice InterContinental Hanoi just by showing my business card.

Even after I chat directly with my company’s travel dept on Wednesday (JAN 2), I think whatever rate they can secure is still going to be way too expensive: either in the Dam or Haarlem. I’m now tentatively booked at the Amadeus Hotel on Grote Markt in Haarlem for 80e/pn and with a room overlooking the Square.
