It is as simple as this: using your hands and finger to put knots into your hair by twisting the hair, and ripping it apart, and rubbing it. In a way, its almost like backcombing without a comb.
twist is palmrollllllll, roll your dreads between your palms like it's a play-doh sausage. rip is when you rip your dreads apart from each other when they start eating each other up and becoming giant congos. rip and twist, twist and rip = all you need to do to your hair.
Not what is meant by this thread, I think. While yes, you do have to rip your dreads, hes talking about the Twist and Rip method of STARTING dreads. I think. And, you dont have to palmroll your dreads.
twist and rip is quite an effective way of starting tight dreads or re-dreading them when they come undone. it works best with skinny dreads. just separate the loose hair into two an inch or two from the knotted part and rip the two pieces apart hard. this forces a bit of knot up the hair. recombine the loose hair, twist it slightly and separate into two different pieces, rip and repeat. if your hair is very strait and silky, you might need to do a couple light strokes of backcombing before twistandripping. if youre using this method to start dreads, youll need to do some backcombing to start the root first. i find that this stays in better than backcombing alone and is at least as fast. hope this answers your questions
