i was at this website where they are discussing about if Christians can listen to hip hop and rap and if not what about christian rap... I think the link to their discussion is... http://jmarq.wordpress.com/ I thought you all would know best here...
I am a Christian. I used to listen to hip hop. Rappers kill and curse in hip hop. However the killing is not real. I watch films. People kill in films. However the killing is not real. People don’t really die in films. People don’t really die in raps. Hip hop can have Christian messages. You don’t necessarily need to listen to Christian hip hop. Lauren Hill, Nas, Wyclef or Tu-Pac are examples. They are religious. Some are Christian. However they are not “Christian Rappers.” Hip hop can be positive for Christian's. It can have Christian messages. Just listen to good rappers. You don’t need Lil’ Kim.
of course they can some rappers even make whole albums devoted to christianity or christian themes bizzy bone & flesh-n-bone for example
i don't know if you really should ask yourself whether your faith allows you to do something or not. i mean do you really think that there are things that all christians do or all christians don't do? christians kill christians rape, don't know wether they do it to a lesser degree than other people funny how christian wonder what they can do and not do, because their sense of being christian, they sometimes really indentify with themselves with their christianity, don't they? they should decide for themselves how to keep up their morals, but i don't need a religion for that you know. doesn't mean i have no morals BTW -just a thought.
Hip-Hop doesn't define lyrical content, and I doubt your god cares about what music you listen to anyway.
Rap and hip hop music says a lot about the human condition. The music provides a voice for many groups of people who do not otherwise have a strong public voice. Jesus was among the sinners and was there to help the lost. Christians can surely listen to hip hop and rap - but we need to hear what the lyrics are saying and if the conent moves us to help make a difference - then act on that inspiration. Remeber while you bob your head to the beat and chant the lyrics that you need to stay true to your own values. I know several major and independent rappers who are Christians. They are looking for a voice for music outside gangs and hoes and money but the major labels don't want to support that, they don't think it will sell and they are being measured against short term sales. There is a new site that is launching that will allow artists to publish their own music and let their fans decide what "sells" b/c the artists will get paid based on their fan traffic. I put a link at the end of this post to the site, wyplanet.com Layzie, Bizzy and Flesh (getting out of jail later this year) from Bone Thugs N Harmony are a part of the new venture and they are planning to publish some christian content. I really hope this site takes off, it is about time we have some options for new content in hip hop, I am pretty sick of hearing the same things being spit out by the major labels over and over and over. The Hip Hop culture is an incredibly powerful voice, maybe this new site concept will allow the talented artists to use their voice for some positive change. free music downloads
