Ok so everybody talks about washing your dreads as often as possible but i'm sure there are also many little methods and habits people use while washing to get everything extra clean. So what are your exact methods of washing? What products do you use?
i wouldn't say to wash your dreads as often as possible, just as often as necessary. mine don't need washing every day, but if those little guys start to get smelly, i'm in the shower quicker than you can spit and holler howdy. i'm a bronner's girl myself, i prefer it to everything i've used. i just use it like regular shampoo, rinse it out, and let my hair air-dry. haven't had any problems yet!
my dreads get washed when they need it, the same as normal hair does! Usally once a week, more in summer though. As soon as I start to get a itchy head I know it's time. I use bronners too. The bar works great, and lathers up so easily. I used knotty boy bar soap before and it's not anywhere as good. Go Dr. Bronners!arty:
i cant say i wash mine as often as needed but i just did momments ago (24 more hours till dry) its gotten to be a chore, should be a 2 person job..lol i try to wash it weakly but dont always only got around to washin em 3 times since the gatherin & daily there they were caked twice as thick with mud (de-mudded in the river daily though) washin the scalp good with bronners & rincin it thru just once & they were good n clean the ends of mine are always draggin on the ground but all u gotta do is clean the scalp real good & rince it thru & really seems to keep em clean but ahh they feel so good now, i was a good 4-5 days past really needin to wash em..lol
i wash like once every three weeks. i just liberally add soap and squeeze into my dreads and just kinda massage them and rinse
I usually wash my dreads twice a week if I have time to allow them to dry as they take about 7 hours.
like everyone else said, my washings revolve around when I know I'll have time to le them dry. I shoot for once a week but sometimes I'm a few days late
i do it about once a week (like others, its when i have time). if i go to the bars or something, i wash it after cause it smells so cigarette-y. i use dr. bonners for washing. and then use aloe. dont do much beyond that with them. i let them take care of themselves, i guess
i havnt actually washed my dreads since like may. i find that if i wash them like every week they get really gross a few days before washing day. they also itch like crazy the whole time (i really do rinse them properly and dilute my dr bronners a lot) so now i just dont wash them and they feel great. it took my scalp awhile to get used to it but now its never oily or very dandruffy and i dont get the goopy shit i used to i do swim in the ocean though but not the past month, its been unusually chilly here
i wash whenever i feel like i need it. if i get itchy, or feel i look yucky, or smell smelly. i love knotty boy soap, it has worked the best for me.. ive even tried dr. bonners which im using know and it just doesnt make my hair feel as nappy... you sort of have to experiment and figure out what is the best soap for your own hair, and how often you should wash your own hair.... everyone is differeent and its great i find the longer i leave my hair the better, the natural oils come out, and then your hair gets used to not being washed as much and stays less greasy looking for way longer!
I found some Doc Bronners today at the natural foods store! bought the tea tree oil kinds (itchy itchy fucking scalp) can't wait to use it. how much should I dilute it down.
i dilute mine about 12 to one with the liquid bronners..... i wash 1 or 2 times weekly n need several hours for them to dry , so try n work it around humidity n such... i switch tween the bronners n me own homemade lye soap... and once in a while do a bs lemon salt rinse ...
I haven't been able to track down any bronners stuff here, so I've been using the 'seanik' shampoo bar from Lush. It's got sea salt and lemon in it which I've heard is good for dreads, and as far as I can tell none of the other ingredients leave any nasty residues. So far so good anyway, they're getting there; a couple are locking up nicely already, and the rest of the hair is slowly getting there. They're forming quite thin, which I think is gonna turn out really good I'll try to get some decent pics up..
i need to get some bronners. i have knotty boy shampoo bars, but i don't like them as much as i know i will like dr. b's. i probably wash my hair every. 2 weeks? maybe week and a half?
Soon as I read your post, I sent my other half to Lush to get some for me All the ingredients are natural, yay! Used it this morning and all seems fine. Mmmm nice smelling dreadies!
I work in a really dusty environment so it necessitates frequent washing. If i wash every day my scalp gets really dry so i usually scrub them every other day with bronners tea tree. Isaac
I wash about every 5 daysish. I use vartiation of the Deep Cleaning Concoction (bicarb) and sometimes I'll pre-soak with some ACVinegar.
I think I wash whenever it occurs to me and I have time to do a thorough job and get a thorough dry. Not that often! I usually use Bronners - liquid peppermint or tea tree. Yum. Sometimes I do an ACV rinse after, depending on conditions. Sometimes I'll run some fresh aloe through my fuzzies if they're bugging me. Here in Tennessee, where we've lived for over two years (can't believe we've stayed in one place this long!) about 8 months of the year it's warm enough for me to attempt weekly washes (they don't always turn out weekly, because I forget!) and the rest of the year, when it's cold... if I'm lucky I get around to it once a month, but it might actually be half that. Not quite sure. My head doesn't seem to get smelly. Don't know why. I've gone as long as 3-4 months on the road, in the woods, etc. w/o washing and it never got gross. That said, I'm on my way to it right now. I accidentally soaked a lock in my soup last night and I want to make sure none of that is left.
