Hi, I have 2 questions about growing a plant in a cupboard - first, what can I do about ventilation given that the cupboard has to be closed most of the time, and a big ventilation/fan system isn't really practical or within my budget? Will the plant just suffocate if left?
Secondly I am wondering about lighting - I want a light that'll do the full spectrum, but I've heard HPS lights get hot (air cooling isn't an option) and are expensive to buy. I'm only growing a single plant in the cupboard (the interior walls of which are covered in aluminium foil) so how big an HPS light would I need, and if I had a fairly small one (small wattage) how much electricity would it use in comparison with a normal house light?
Sorry I've gone on a bit, this is my first time growing a plant and I need loads of info :)
    Thanks

There are six environmental factors that you need to keep in balance:

    1. The growing medium.
    2. Nutrients.
    3. Water.
    4. Light.
    5. Atmosphere.
    6. Temperature.

If any one of these six factors is not kept in "balance", your plant could die! Proper ventilation will take care of numbers 5. and 6. Without adequate ventilation your plant wont do well (if at all).
These are like "The Six Commandments"; learn all you can about these six things and find out how impotant they are!!!
If you're not willing to ventilate the cupboard, there's no point in talking about lights!

You could get one of thouse 150w HPS. That'll be enough for one plant. HPS will get hot if it gets to close to the plant. Just put a simple fan blowing air inside.

for a small cupboard i would rig up a couple computer fans for your ventilation, whip up a mr clean auto dry water filter, get a digital water ph checker, ph up and down, some decent soil, and in a cupboard i would use fluoros for a mixed spectrum just use like 3 cool whites and 3 warm whites, you don't need 3 and 3, if you need more do like 4 and 4, hopefully that makes sense. Also look into gettin jorge cervantes grow bible....read it cover to cover a couple times.....this will help tremendously....also go to like icmag.com or hg420.com and check out some good grow journals/diaries.......this should get you off to a decent start.

Everyone else already said pretty much everything you gotta know, but man you gotta take down that foil. Foil isn't reflective at all, just plain white paint reflects something like 80% of the light, so just paint the inside of you cab white.

    How big is the space?

i was just doing some critical thinking...and i was wondering... and this is only theoretical, not sure if it's possible at all... This would take some hardcore engineering skills... I wonder if you could grow a serious marijuana plant in something no bigger than a shoebox. What do you think ? Send your comments please...

I used a 400 HPS in a single wardrobe, installed a 100mm exhaust with filter, drilled holes using a 20mm spade bit for intake aand ventilation, the gaps from the doors pulled enough air in anyway. i had slight problems when the plants got to big but that was my own fault for over crowding.

Get a T-5 flourescent fixture and save yourself the headache of the heat buil-up. These powerful flourescents provide enough lumen to grow a single plant start to finish. This is exactly what I'm doing now. Also would help in investing in a "Home-Box". I'm using there XS model with fantastic results
