i think alot of difference here in this thread is our ages, the generation gap.. i personally find it kinda sorta odd to suggest synthetics as well, it cant be the same as actual dreads that have formed over time. Being a mom of a 16 yr old i can sorta see why mom is thinking wait a bit,,, my kid thought she wanted them too and being herself a few days later changed her mind,,, it would be a pretty permanent thing to do to your hair and as we moms know,,, daughters hair tends to be pretty important and what would you do if 4 months down the road you couldnt comb your dreads out because you have found them to be not what you thought or more work than you expected ( or whatever the reasoning)...,, not all dreads are able to be combed back out,,, especially very long hair that has been let to do its thing naturally,,, aint no way i could get a comb thru hhb's dreads even with 5 gallons of conditioner... maybe to help in your quest for dread eventually learn all you can,,, show mom etc,,, but aint no point in coming to a huge battle over yer hair,,, if you feel when yer 18 or out on yer own that you want them then grow them,,,, fake ones are just not gonna give you the experience of dreads other than lookin in a mirror,,, to give a general idea of how you may one day possibly look growing your own... i personally would wait n later on down the road when your not under moms rules do what you wish ,,,,or maybe see bout talking to mom n havin her help you put a gazillion braids in your head,,, n just never take them out if you actually like them by then mom will be used to the "look" and gives you a more real idea of what it is like,,, n yes they do eventually dread,,, lil different fashion but sweet dreadies none the less
I combed mine out after about 3 1/2 years. It took months to do, but I ended up with long hair (past my shoulders) that wasnt damaged after using a lot of conditioner. I've known people who have combed them out after a few years as well, with similar results. Just keep in mind though, that dreadlocks will take a while to harden and become "locked" I'd say it would be fairly easy to comb them out up to 5-6months.
i guess me and your daughter have somethin in common because i do like to change my hair alot. i just like to be different and try out everythin and that is also a little bit why i thought temporary would be a good idea and i dont want synthetics i would like it to be natural....and with the braids would i try them up with hair band?
Before I put my dreads in I did these sort of twist things... they were pretty much the same as dreads but I just lightly backcombed them and twisted them so they weren't so hard and packed in. I was able to brush them out after about 3 weeks or so, and it just gives you an idea of if it's right for you or not.
