Can any animals have rythym?? Can they enjoy music to some extent?? to my knowledge they are completely oblivious to it.

That's an interesting question. I think maybe some of the more advanced primates could recognize a beat or rhythm but not really understand it's purpose or why it's there. However, there are even more intelligent creatures (dolphins and whales) who's senses or communication are based primarily on sound (think of whale songs and SONAR in dolphins) which I believe might even enjoy music or find meaning in it, possibly moreso than we do ourselves! Imagine being able to see, hear, and feel the music!

Yeah thanks for the reply because i was curious about it and this was interesting to read. music must be like pure heaven for dolphins if it is more euphoric for them!!

I think a study was done on certain animals - like rats/dogs/cats - and found that certain styles of music had different effects, i.e. soothing music calmed the animals down while loud, fast paced music seemed to agitate them.

Haha, that research is about as effective as.. observing that kicking a cat up the ass every 2 seconds agitates them and stroking them calms them..

Cows give more milk with classical playing than rock & roll.Didn't know cows were so discriminating.

I had a music teacher who told me that he was watching a famous soprano singer sing, and a bird flew down and sat on the window sill. And then another one came down. And then another one. Before he knew it, several birds were trying to sit on the window sill to listen to her. It was a very endearing story.

i actually think it is a very interesting topic. is enjoyment of music(which essentially is e set of more or less structured sounds) a feature that only occurs for humans? if so, why? if not, is the experience of music different for animals? which certainly is the case, since different animals have differently developed senses for every species. another question would be, what would the consequences be for the different developed senses of species and their experience of music. man i should become a biologist or something like that....

I know it does, at least in my house. My cat loves when I play certain artists, jam bands, bluegrass, for example, easy stuff. When I'm in a rocking mood, she hates it, runs and hides.

Our kitty cat hated rock music too, often wondered if it was the music, or if it was it my demeanor when playing those songs that upset the cat?

In any case, animals can react in different ways to classical or modern music...

i'm wondering if tests have been done with ambient or new age music. for some reason, it seems like that would have the best effect. even when i wasn't into anything relatively mellow at all, it would always soothe me in a really weird way... now that i've grown to like shit like that as music, it still has the same impact on mellowing me out.

Although I have never seen my cat dance. I have seen him come sit down near me and become very relaxed when I spin some celtic songs.

I think that if animals could concentrate that would be easy to answer. If we studied brain activities in animals as they listened to music what type of response would we want to observe could music/rythme create a emotion in a animal. Can you concider the animals response as emotion>If your dog is happy isnt he happy? But I dont know what we would really be looking for? Animals do have memories . Primates show empathy. How far away are we from understanding the vide a animal feels?
I thought this up once when I was triping. I heard the rythme of a running engine a truck was coming down the road but there were plenty of trucks. But I started hearing with a different ear. They didnt sound like trucks now they were blending together as a harmony funky like brumbruabrmm/. I began to have that sence that this is how the dog might hear these sounds' It didnt seem bothersome with this ear like it did with my human untwisted ear> Like I will normally be annoyed by traffic sounds. Then I think about this music idea because the trucks seem to have a language to themself on this stretch of road A certain type of dumptruck was a fleet of truck leaving the terminal as there distance in location and sound travelled differently since my mind could picture the location of one truck while hearing the others > how are animals processing these sound and how instintive are the proceess.
There were rythms in the truck sounds just as music but animals really dont seem to care for sounds like that. The thing is what brings a sound into the attention feild of mind to cause a reaction. You dance because you have control. Does a dog dance?
Yes you can train a dog to dance and a proffesional would probable be using the some kind of music. Dog might respond to music> Due to association with rythm and training just as so how they hear your voice. But animal feel sound wave and some animals now sence ultrasound and microwave so I would beee more cocerned to what you cant hear that animals can. So the answer is for sure they feel it.
