    Hi,
firstly i'd like to say hello to everyone and i'm looking forward to getting to know a whole bunch of new people, but i gots to admit from reading through several threads i'm quite worried that there is a distinct lack of Genuine people, please don't take offence to this as i'm sure i have just been reading the wrong threads but it seems alot of people here are very confused as to who they really are, and are almost sucuming to stereo typing to find themselves rather than truly embracing their beleifs and what they mean.

the first thread i looked at was something about "What is a hippie?" and i was suprised that people didn't really have a good answer, obviusely to define oneself in a few short paragraphs or even in a whole essay is not possible but it seemed people had not even the smalest simple explanations.

i'm sorry this post is such a negative for my introduction and i promise that in truth i am very possitive and i'm sure that i have mearly scratched the slightly ugly and roughened surface of what is actualy a sweet and beautiful comunity.

Take a trip round all the forums - especially the personal forums. There are so many disparate groups, and some will appeal to you and others you may well feel excluded from. UK forum has some great people in it, and some not so nice. They do tend to meet up, and I know there's a lot down your way. It's not my cup of tea as I feel too old, but I pop in occassionally when I spot something in active threads that takes my fancy. Moominmamma talks to a few of the UK forummers via MSN and PM's - this place isn't just the public forums.

As for consistancy - well writing in the same coloured text would be a start, (joke!). I think most of us would settle for a collage of impressions of what being a hippie is, rather than some dictionary definition. It's as elusive as trying to define being English or a man, and getting total agreement. There are a few of the original '60's flower children on the US threads, but they aren't getting any younger, and many put forward a very liberationist slant on life that can seem at times almost right wing.

Thankfully, there are a few threads where people don't take life quite so seriously - so tune in, turn on and, like the man says, drop out.

Don't expect anyone to be 100% genuine, no-one really knows anyone. I didn't actually realise this forum was hippy-orientated, but hey, I'm not NF or anything so I'm probably ok. Have fun just posting what ever and they'll either kick you out or they won't.

I posted that there because I have been wondering all my life (or since 17 at least) what actually is that; yet how do you define a Christian, and American, an Indian? It seems that whatever defintion you give would be wrong in that is is definitive of something so all- encompassing.

When I was living on second ave in NY, the line from the Filmore East would reach my door which was at the corner of 8ths street from 7st where the Filmore was."the weekend hippies are here"
was what my associates would say, having abandoned family and state to live in the Village with friends in different pads all over the East village that at that time (1969) was from 30$ to 40$. My apt was at that time 54$ a month, but in that location that was rare. As you moved further east; 1st ave, ave A, ave B, aveC and D,you could even find wholle empty buildings where people would fix a place and live there undisturbed.

Right now many Yuppies have to share and espensive studio. I suppose that in those days if you had ran away and were trying to make it in The village, that was the definition of a hippie.
Not all hippies worked, but some wanted to work as messengers or something free like that. Not everyone enjoyed crashing with many other people. I never did. I stayed three months in 1969 St marks place, a shelter for boys, till a couple of people let me be a roomate for a while.

If you like the wholle hippie idea and dare to dress in confortable colorful clothes for me that alone makes a hippie. I cant' be obligated to dress otherwise because for me THAT is totally impractical.
EDIT:Let no one tell you what is a hippie. For me it is being an individual that changes what needs to be changed, and keeps what needs to be keeped, as the sesons (decades) change, but for you it could be something else.

    Peace.

WoW....I thought one of the whole concepts of a hippie was live and let live...accept others as they are, and allow others to accept you as you are.

Think of this as a small town, with over 9,000 people...sure there are going to be alot of these people you will not "get" or you will "get" and not like. But, to come in right off the bat making negative judgements, isn't the best way to connect with the "Genuine" people you seem to be missing here. Believe me we are all "Genuine People" different in many ways, but completely Genuine.
Just be yourself, and you will attract like people, as you will eventually find your spot on here, and be able to connect with ALOT of alright peoples.
Welcome to the forums...just give them a chance first.

    Hi,
sorry i didn't mean to be so negative and i know that my way of questioning was quite judgemental, i really was just upset 'cause round my way there isn't a hippie scene at least not in my age group and so when i found the site i was quite excited to see that there was a large comunity here, and then after reading the first few threads it was more that after getting my hopes up i realised that not everyone here was going to be so nice as i had hoped,

i know that there are obviusely alot of very nice people here and i was jumping to a very fast conclusion sorry.

ps i'll keep it all in black if the multi colours were a bit to crazy sorry, :D

    Nope,

Find your own colour as well as your own voiice - it was the multi-colour swop-shop effect that does for these old eyes I'm afraid.

If you have a look at "where are you from" in the UK, there appears to be a lot going on in Dorset\Bournemouth, South London, and the wondrous Fleassy is now heading off to start college in Brighton - fire poi on the beach anyone?

    Awww dont be worried!

It's a nice comfortable haven with alot of helpful and friendly, interesting and talented people. I'm not going to lie, there are the occasional spammers, and yes, they can get irritating, but for the most part it's a real nice place and I'm sure you'll enjoy you're time here.

They dont call this site addictive for nothing ;)
