hi everyone im new to this forum.. at the beginin i was goin to do dreads with wax, but im thinking of makin with crochet needle/hook now.. cuz i see noone likes wax and neither recommend it i have asian hair and its about 12 cm.. (5 inches i think) i think i cant do the neglet method with my hair.. its too thick i'll do them like this: wash with soap, sink them in salt water, dry it, backcomb it, roll them with my hands, and all the loose hair that remains i will pull them with a crochet hook... something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdYxAVo_0A8 so i have some questions.. 1) do you think my method will work well?? 2) if wash my hair with soap, it will dry. But will it make my hair weaker? is it bad? 3) how long will it be(with my 12cm hair)? is it better to start short then keep maintaining them? or should i wait longer to do? these dreads look nice too.. he made with crochet hook: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtJJyclYCAo thanx in advance.. peace
I think your method will work though the soap may be harsh on your hair. You would be better off with a non-residu shampoo. The crocheting of dreads seems to be a temporary thing and something you have to keep on doing from what I've read (I've never done it). Starting with shorter hair always seems to be better. They just mateur better for some reason (I don't know why, it's just what I've read). I just restarted my dreads and my hair barely came to my shoulders. I didn't lose much length dreading it. Good luck hon! Jess
thanks.. but what do you mean by temporary thing? Im willing to do the maintance with no problem... where can i buy a non-residu shampoo? any brand recommendation? can i find it on rite aid? or any pharmacy? thanks again
I think she might mean that by "temorary" your hair will still unravel again after crotcheting, it will unravel less and less over time but dont expect to only crotchet once and have perfect dreads from that point on. also buy some Dr. Bronners castile soap (liquid or soap bar) good stuff, not just good for hair but for all other washing purposes.
i did it with the dreads of a friend and when you do that and backcomb it a couple of times i never had any problems with it
thank you again.. i know that i'll have to keep maintaining untill it mature.... and even after maturing sometimes huh? im going to find that dr bronners on the internet.. thanks.. any recommendation for crocheting method??
You dont HAVE to maintain, if you dont want to. Asian hair will dread naturally, but it needs to be really long.
soap is fine for your hair, but detergent is bad. just because it says its soap doesnt mean it really is. look for something with plant oils, essential oils, and lye. stay away from sodium lareth sulphates or anything similar and anything that sounds like a chemical cleaner or preservative. dr bronners is a great soap to use, just make sure to dilute it lots.
thanks.. i've been talking to some people and i won't do it backcombing and soap... i'll wash my hair with this dr. bronners [dilutes it lots about how much(x/y)????] and use just a crochet hook and hands. it will be nice, no harsh products peace (-.-)_;
i dilute mine about 1:10. if youre having problems washing it all out, dilute more. and dr bronners is soap lol
i am asian too, i got my dreads about 3 months ago via backcombing and then croquet hook the frizzys in, didnt get the ends croquetted in tho, i kinda like the whispy ends they are doing good, getting tighter and the ends are knotting up and looking less whispy i try and keep them pretty neat and maintained too look presentable for work, this probably is about 2hrs worth of croquetting in the frizzies ever week, i used to do it more but its taking less and less work to keep them neat my hair is pretty thick, in both volume and texture, and also wavy, and it seems to be dreading up ok, so i dont think u will have too much problem with it neither good luck mate, post up a pic!
thanx gurl... you encouraged me more.. i saw some pics of yours... but i want more fatties dreadlocks... today, i bought a Dr. bronners Peppermint soap (liquid) and i will start washing my hair with it.. but i didnt get the dreads yet.. im finding the stuff i need so i can do it right.... i already bought the crochet hook and the organic soap and ill find some rubberbands to separate the hair in sessions then i will knot up with my hand, repair with the crochet hook and maintain em till they get dreaded i will dilute the soap 1/10 (thx wanderin_blues) what do you mean by dr bronners is soap? wasn't i supposed to wash my dreadies with it?? ill post some pics of my dreads as soon as i get em my back hair is about 2 n 1/2 inches now =( but my front hair is about 5,6... im from and born in brazil btw.. but im asian background and im studying in california... wtf! thx again for every1 hashish!!
yeah lol what i meant is, soap is good for your dreads and dr bronners is soap so its good for your dreads. things like shampoo, dish soap, body wash and generic liquid hand soaps are detergents (using chemical foaming agents) and are bad for your dreads. they claim to be soaps, but real soap is made from oil or fat and lye, not sls.
hehe yeah man its prolly a very wise idea to get ur scalp used to the new chemical-free soap b4 u start ur dreads, u will find that ur scalp will produce less oil and stay clean for longer if u wash with doc bronners for a couple weeks, that way it will be easier for u to keep ur head clean and less itchy for the first couple weeks after u actually start the dreadding and aint supposed to wash... i wish id done that b4 i started dreading, my head was oily as all heck for the first week when i didnt wash... not very nice!
oohhh thx hauhauh i was like "shit i bought it for nothin" my english is bad yet.. hahaha nice.. i see that you're from BC!! i've been to vancouver three times already... is the place that i love the most... more than amsterdam, brazil, cali, any place there i've been to..... its so nice there.. hahaha im planning to study there as soon as possible.. and growwww it for sure!!! hahaha!!! well.. take care thx again
falo sim.. so brasileiro.. hauhau alguma dica ae? eu dei uma trancada em nums cabelo e fico um dreadzinho.. hahaha nem fiz o backcomb ainda.. e nem vo fazer!! ou faz? vo fazer na mao e na agulha soh.. e to lavando o cabelo com dr bronners faz uns dias.. abracoo.. haha sry for posting in portuguese..
