this was the movie that clued me into why people like johnny depp, made all his other films suddenly make sense to me
jesus i mustve watched this film 20 times like a never ending loop im sucked back into its vortex the only way to escape it is to push to the center and try and go through it
fear & loathing: great book, badbad movie-'where the buffalo roam' is so much better...bill murray's best performance
perfect! I was hoping somebody would reference "where the buffalo roam"! excellent movie; Bill Murray rocks the socks off my cock!! he has such a natural screen presence for such a role. You can definitely see where depp got a lot of his inspiration. i also think peter boyle is awesome in this movie, not as classic as benicio del toro's portrayal but nonetheless a great performance.
How could you like the book and not the movie. Terry Gilliam did a great job of showing the chaos and distortion of reality that the Good Dr. was trying to put in ink. They both succeeded. I have watched the movie prolly 50 times and read the book 5 or 6 times. It's the only book that I can pick up and just flip open and start in the middle.
I'd really like to read the book-- I almost bought it, but decided against it-- man! I really want to watch this movie now.... D=.
it was brilliant because of the way they so flawlessley transfered a classic book to a classic movie...not many movies are like that.
If I could only watch one movie for the rest of my life, it would be Fear & Loathing... Haven't read the book, so can't compare, but this was my first taste of Hunter Thompson and Johnny Depp both, so it scored all the way around for me. Not to mention that I really enjoy the movie.
depp is perfect, but personally i enjoy benicio del-toro more. not that one performance is stronger than the other, but the gonzo character is just so exhilarating. the fun and the fear of being around a man like that is captured well. it's kinda like putting your trust in a person to be the other half of a crazed LSD adventure, only to realize that the person has cracked and the only one holding it together is yourself, which is also deeply worrying, because you are barely in control. actually it's exactly like that! comparisons to the book are always a bit silly, because the two mediums are so vastly different. the film works on so many levels, has so many layers. i still find new images/sounds/phrases/ideas in it.
i fucking love this movie, in case you can't tell by my signature. before i had seen it, an acquaintance who was of course HIGH when he watched it told me that depp and del toro were transporting a baby in the backseat of the car but they got so fucked up they forgot it was there and it died. i've now seen the film a million times and have yet to see a baby other than the fake one used in the trapeze scene. but i'm glad. I love babies! to see one die would've made the movie too sad.
"you want me to throw this in the tub when white rabbit peaks?" "this is lucy. Lucy paints pictures of barbara streisand!"
Like several people said, there are two different media here. We have to give the movie producers credit for the special effects, like the hotel clerk turning into a monster while Hunter's trying to check in. It's similar to the producers of "Naked Lunch" coming up with a movie that was like the book in many ways. The movie "Naked Lunch" actually had a story line where the book did not, also that movie had excellent special effects.
I love this movie - it never fails to crack me up. Love Terry Gilliam as well, and Johnny Depp is amazing! I adore the fact that he always plays quirky characters. My favorite line? "Holy Jesus, what are these goddamn animals?!"
i thought fear & loathing was pretty funny, the situations they got in and how they were handled. great movie
