To the Ojibway, the Northern Lights are known as Waussnodae. During the winter it was believed that the departed spirits of the grandfathers would return to lodges in the north were they would always keep fires burning. The Waussnodae were believed to be the reflection of this fire. Another belief had it that the Waussnodae were reflections of the torches that the grandfathers used to illuminate the Path of Souls that the spirits would follow on their way to the Land of Peace.
