I just picked up a violin and I'm trying to learn how to play it. Anyone have any tips, links or anything that could help me out?

I used to play violin a long time ago, and I guess it just comes naturally. One thing I do reccomend is make sure your posture is right and you are holding everything correctly, by either showing your teacher (if you have lessons) or looking it up on the internet or in books. Posture is very important in violin playing. Hope that's helped!

and don't forget christian ferras and david oistrakh, here's a great video -

i'd really recommend getting lessons, they'll help you immensely and prevent bad habits from the beginning. essential elements books are good starters, but i'm unfamiliar with other lesson books so there's probably something better. just stay focused and don't give up too easily, and most importantly, enjoy it :D

there are also some good discussions and tips at violinist.com

ah, how could I forget David Oistrakh hes always been one of my favorites and As Farabovetheclouds pointed out posture is more improtant than words can say for tone quality! Espically the bow arm; it needs to be paralelle to the ground for every string but "E" and the wrist always a bit lower than the elbow. As for the mechanics of bowing its mostly an elbow motion with a little wrist changing directon and tilt the bow away from yourself near the frog and then flatten it out at the tip.

to learn it by yourself may work greatly, even though things may feel like &#%#&#% from time to time ... specially without the immidiate feedback.

And also it depends on which kind of music you want to learn - which speaks most to you ?

Then simply start with empty strings ... like you would pull the music out of the string ... and when you feel like you get something out of it, do the scales and go up and down ... ... ... slowly ... no hurry ... just patience .... ;)

The bow is like breath - just don't stop it.

The fingers (left hand) make the notes but it's the bow (right hand) which makes the music.

Let us know how things go ! Enjoy ...

I'm trying to learn violin right now, really not getting the strings at the moment!I know the basic strings, but am struggling with sharps and flats. I'm going to get a teacher soon, but want to get as much done as I can first.

Does anyone know of any good websites to help get that sorted?

I used to play violin, all i did was hear the song, pick it out on the keyboard that I had and then slowly transfer the notes from the keyboard onto the violin...It was simple for me? good luck!

Learn to play it like a famous violinist and then you will amaze friends and family and may earn some money at it. Thats my advice, you ask all the great violinists they will tell you its the only advice you need

Yep that would amaze people, but violin is pretty tricky until you get the hang of where the notes are and the correct way to hold the bow. I would suggest at least having a couple of lessons just to get the technical side down then just practice at much as you can!
