Heyy... I just checked out this book called "The Teenage Liberation Handbook:how to quit school and get a real life education" by Grace Llewellyn, i havent read it yet, but i heard good things about it. any one here read it? School sucks anyways!
I was just reading about this online so I checked it out of my library. I haven't read it yet. I've heard really good things, so I'm thinking that I'm going to regret not reading it sooner.
yaaaa quit school. I did it, I'm starting uni two years earlier and I'm having so much fun and learning way more than I was in school, where I was forced to sit under fluorescent, refused to answer calls of nature, and graded like cattle, not to mention subjected to every insecure person around my age for 7h a day, which has some benefits, but a hell of a lot of bad effects. so yup. it's a good choice.
I finished it. I'm not quitting school.. I'm nearly done and I need financial aid and such. It has changed my perspective on things. I think I'm going to encourage everyone else to read it.
But skip the first 1/3 where it talks about school. Another one is "A Practical Guide to Unschooling for Teenagers" by Wendy Priesnitz. Way shorter book.
I found a great solution to getting out of the hell of high school. I withdrew from high school, I'm being "homeschooled" but I'm just taking courses at the community college around here. I'm saving money for college in the long run, I have SO MUCH MORE TIME NOW (before I didn't even have time to do the work I was required to do), and I'm free!! I'm tellin' ya, anyone who hates high school or it just isn't for them, find a college near you that has early admission. So as a senior (and sometimes junior) in high school you can start college early and get out of high school once and for all.
You can go to college with homeschool. I quit highschool because it was not for me, mainly for the same reasons mentioned above. Highschool was a joke, where I didn't learn ANYTHING about life, discipline, spirituality, or even increase my intelligence. Once I started doing homeschool, I very quickly learned discipline (Having to choose books instead of computer or video games), My knowledge increased (school actually became fun to learn!) I got to design my school system in my OWN way, at home. When and how I did schoolwork was now MY decision, not the decision of a few underpaid , unhappy elders. I have to say, I would be a much more miserable, unintelligent, and bored person had I not smartened up and left Highschool. Through my homeschool, I have the ability to finish whenever I want. The harder and faster I work, the quicker it gets done. The advantages of homeschool are plentiful, with very few disadvantages (such as missing out on social interactions).
im getting homeschooled too!!!!!! i can honestly say i've never been more excited for anything! i can't wait! i got this book tonight from the library, it's sitting in my lap, it looks very empowering!
i quit highschool also when i was 16 and i am still not done, at first i got my shit done fast. the work is boring and it is just buisy work and when there is no one pushing you to finish you eventually loose your desire to finish. i am just now starting to pick up my books again and get my shit done. i do not suggest this route because i am starting college late and i partied wayyyyy tooo much when i was not in school, now i would say that i have a pretty heavy substance abuse problem .... STAY IN SCHOOL! and for those of you who arent going to anyways - you should read the un - college alternative. its a great well written book on cheap ways to travel the world and rewarding carrers that do not require degrees.
What an interesting concept--teenagers need to be liberated... When I was in my teens, like a goof, I would have heartily agreed with that, but seriously, and I know this may sound cliched, but most of you have it really good. Anyone who thinks otherwise, I invite to find out what it used to be like to go to school. You think you have no freedom and rights now... To be honest, though, I'm still traumatized by high school; but high school is reality, it is a microcosm of the "real world" and it serves to prepare people for the realities of the workforce. I think people who prefer to be homeschooled are avoiding this to a degree. Sure, academically you may be better of, but seriously, for the most part, knowledge and intellect have little bearing on how well one succeeds in the workforce.
Paul.. if something is better than it has been, it does not follow that it is really good. I do not believe school is a microcosm of the real world, because the real world consists of so many opposites and climates and atmospheres. From my experience, school is not all of that in any way. Tell me, by 'workforce,' do you mean all jobs? I think there you have made a fallacy by assuming what we all want is to be in the workforce. However, this is not necessarily true if you are including entrepreneurs. One more question: What does have bearing on how one succeeds in the workforce?
All it takes is somebody who can scan it. People should put more books on the web! Knowledge is power (yet ignorance is blissed ), so you should share it! If I can't get it free I, wont buy it anyway! And those, who can buy the book would probably do that, because a real book is much more personal and enjoyable than loads of eye-teasing letters on screen.
There are three chapters at this site: http://www.lowryhousepublishers.com/tlh excerpts.htm and the base site for that is http://www.lowryhousepublishers.com/TeenageLiberationHandbook.htm then there's always the library where you can get the whole thing instead of hurting your eyes or wasting a tree
This book isn't about quitting school and doing nothing. It's not really about doing schoolwork at home.. unless you want to. You can learn without textbooks and such. You can usually learn basic school subjects just doing things you like.
