Landon has his first tooth coming through! :hurray:

but it's making him completely miserable. He isn't eating as much as usual, hes super cranky almost all day long, and he's been taking little naps every few hours all day and waking up all through the night. Poor little guy. You can see the break in his gums where the tooth is coming in, and his gums are pretty swollen. :(

I have been giving him tylenol once in awhile and sometimes it seems to help a lot and sometimes not at all. Everyone keeps suggesting Orajel, but while I was pregnant I heard something about how it's possible that orajel could make the tounge numb and a baby could choke on it while sleeping, and I'm really nervous about using it now. I know that when I used it as an adult for toothaches it made my whole mouth and part of my throat numb. Do you think it's safe?? I'm sure it would make him feel much better, but it makes me nervous.

What else can I do for him? We have been chilling those gummy teethers and he loves those, and he also likes chewing on frozen baby biscuits and stuff like that. Any other suggestions? I feel so bad for my little monkey...

i've used oragel without problems on my kids, but i used it extremely sparingly. holding an ice cube on the spot where the tooth is coming in helps numb it too. just be careful not to put a small cube of ice in the little one's mouth which could slip out of your hands and cause choking. since you know the inflammation doesn't have a viral source, you could use baby aspirin instead of tylenol. i found it to be more effective.

I used cold carrots cut into managable pieces. They liked to chew on them when teething and they helped.

I used clove oil too. My daughter loved it. With my son, which was before I knew about clove oil, I used orajel. Both work, it just depends on your preference.

i swear by the hylands teething tablets (health food store) they are great because they are homeopathic and you can't overdose 'em and they taste good and refrigerated/semi-frozen washcloths to chew on...

keep plastic, vinyl synthetic teethers out of babies mouth, chemicals that are released are toxic and can cause cancer. NPR just did a whole expose on children testing positive on toxins like thallates (spelling?) that come from synthetic toys and teethers and baby bottles.

thanks earthy mama!!! I saw those things while I was pregnant and thought they looked so neat, but I thought I'd wait to get one and I had completely forgotten about them! He would absolutely love that I'm sure.

As for the teething tablets, I got some and they seem to make him feel better for a little while. As soon as he gets them in his mouth though he tries to eat it, refusing to let it desolve under his tounge as directed, so Ive been making a paste of them and rubbing it around under his tounge and on his gums. Seems to be working alright. Is it really safe to use every hour or 2?
