hi all I have seen this movie two or three times and I just cant understand it ... I mean I think there are lots of symbols that I cant get the meaning off and it would be nice if you can help me btw the music of that movie is very cool ciao
havent seen it yet.I plan too soon however and will come back if I can remember and see if I can help ya out. However some movies I am not so great at understanding either that most can so if you cant..chances are I will not either lol. The matrix is still beyond me haha
what don't you understand? (i'm not saying this in a patronizing way...i'm really honestly asking what i can help explain?) its the story of lovers over 3 distinct times spain - the queen and the conquestedor (sp?) modern day - the doctor and his sick wife the future - the future being and the tree in each tale humans are trying to cheat death and live eternally.
Hmmm... I never thought about it that way. I think it is a weird film. I'm sure it has some kind of hidden message though.
the queen wants to give her people eternal life....especially after witnessing the persecution and condemnation being doled out by the catholic church during the time. the doctor wants to give his dying wife eternal life. the future being wants to give himself eternal life, but finds that if he depends upon the tree for this end, he is destined to fail.
hey what do you guys think about the reality of the movie? what i mean is; you can look at it 2 ways (or more I'm sure) 1. the only reality is the present time story, in which the other 2 story lines are the book that her and her husband write together. 2. the 3 story lines are all the same reality where the main character is actually immortal. i haven't seen the movie recently to embellish on these thoughts, just some leftovers i can remember. And personally looking back the 1st choice is the one i like the best.
I don't think that there is a set way to "understand" this film. Go check out the boards on The Fountain at www.imdb.com. Some people have posted some very interesting interpretations of the film there. I love it.. an extraordinarily beautiful piece of film-making.
I think it's best not to interpret everything literally. Basically, it's about overcoming the fear of death, and giving into one's destiny and role in the natural order of things. The three main characters are the same person because they have the same fear and are fighting the same struggle. The tree links them together because it symbolizes their need for life, but in the end the character realizes that life is eternal, because everything continues into something else, and one life always becomes another.
