why would anyone want to be in a cover band? i mean i can understand liking a band so much that you cover a song, but being in a band whos sole purpose is to play someone elses material? on the other end of the spectrum why would anyone actually pay money to attend a cover band concert? why not put a cd in your stereo and press play? it seems to me it will sound better than some wannabee on the stage. bottom line: cover bands need to die out like the dinosaurs
I think some are pretty cool it all depends Richard Cheese for instance, he makes lounge covers of popular music - they are awesome and sometimes funny as hell sometimes he even makes a few lyric changes either in parody of the song or for other humor
yeah i'm not sure why anyone would ever want to be in a cover band. I've sceen aussie floyd and dark star orchestra though and those were sick concerts.
I've been to see some good coverbands. Badfish is a good sublime cover band, and darkstar is a great band. It's all about the $$$...
Well, without coverbands a lot of people would not be able to see certain shows. A pink floyd band came to my town not too long ago and they were wicked, rather see the real band but w.e. And i guess without coverbands we would never have heard Beethoven or any other classical stuff. But sublime...darkstar covers? just noobs without talent.
the entire concept of cover bands or more classy "tribute" bands is rotten. be yourself! you'll never be an artist following some dumb rock star's blueprints.
Because alot of cover bands are really good and putting a CD into a stereo isn't the same thing as hearing live music in a 4,000 seat arena
i really like grateful dead cover bands. ive seen about 5 or 6 different ones and loved them all. the music comes with a vibe that is only created live. i saw a phish cover bad recently and i enjoyed it but the vocals were lacking. they are not strictly a phish cover band, but that what they were doing on the night i saw them. i saw a led zeppelin cover band over the summer and i freekin loved it. there were no vocals which was the best idea they ever had. its very difficult to match the vocals of zeppelin. the jams were sweet and i think id rather see them live again then see the real zep.
The only cover band i can think of thats BIG is Dark Star Orchestra.. and well they are like no other.. they will cover a set to the T.. every single note.. every little jam that was thrown into that show... DSO is for the people that were never able to see the dead.. but want to know what the experience somewhat was like.. or feel as if they were at a dead show.. thats how well DSO sells their shit.. doesnt matter if it was a stellar set or an off night.. they play the show the exact same way the dead played it on that very same night.. as for a cover band rapper.. seriously.. who would want to see that... its bad enough that they already use other peoples material as is.... but you will find a lot of different cover bands out there that will cover rap songs every now and then.. my buddy wants to play out Gimme Dat Nut.. but putting beats to chords aint all easy
I'm not big into cover bands either. I think that most of them end up doing cover songs and eventually becoming cover bands is because they have no talent of their own. They have to replay what was already a hit. Although as far as the grateful dead go.. There will always be people who wanna play their music just as their will always be people who wanna hear it. That's a different story. I think Red dog is one of those bands too, or is it called something else? I used to go to this barn where they'd have dead head shows and stuff and meet some really cool gdead cover band members. We'd hang out and share joints together. That was like the closest I'll ever come to an actual grateful dead experience. So they are good for something..
for sure DSO is the bomb Jade are you talking about Rat Dog just saw Phil Lesh & friends @ CAL awesome show but what else would you expect AC/DSHE i think thats it they are an all girl AC/DC cover band they rocked the fuck out of the Hollister rally cover bands are fun if you take them for what they are....not the original but some of them get close enough to let the party take over
One cover band I can think of that I'm pretty sure no one has ever walked away disappointed from is Australian Pink Floyd, they put on one hell of a show, honestly it's better then most real bands.
Well, I think that what most of you guys are referring to as cover bands, I would refer to as tribute bands. Are you talking about bands that only play the music of others generally, or bands that only play the music of a single band? Either way, I see why some of you think they are lame, but they have their place, for many reasons. First of all, some people really like playing certain music, and others really like hearing that same music performed live. If I could make a living as a member of a Zeppelin tribute band, I would go for it in a second. Are you kidding me? Rocking out to Zeppelin every night? It doesn't get any more fun than that. Secondly, some people just don't have the same ambitions as artists like John Lennon or Jimi Hendrix. Not everyone wants to change the world with his/her music, and there is nothing wrong with that.
I've heard of amazing Zep cover bands, but I've gotta say, you're stretching it with that last comment
