my dreads are about 2 months old and they are coming along really well. They are my second set and all i did was backcomb and just leave em(can recommend that enough, they feel waaaaaaaaaaay cleaner). anywho, my problem is that my hair is super curly and the ends sort of unraveled for a long part of the dread and i'm afriad that they'll just keep doing that and not stop... which would be bad if the dreaded part kept coming undone. i really dont wanna risk fucking them up by rebackcombing.

so, will time correct this problem?

The ends of mine are all curly, but only an inch or so. They don't just unravel. Don't fret.

well... time will correct the problem in so far as they will either stay curly and you'll learn to accept and love them or they'll eventually knot up. But they might ALWAYS be loose and curly at the ends. But really, blunt tips are overrated. I wish my ends were loose and curly :)

my ends are all curly and unknotted. I love it personally. I always thought that if i just gave them time they would eventually lock up but apparently they don't as my ends have been curly for 2 1/2 years. Long live curls!

If you are really desparate to get them to knot, use some Lock Peppa (Dreadhea make this and I have found it invalauble for rubbing knots where needed) rub it into the loose part of the dreads, palm roll/rub until it's nice and knotty, then rub the end of the dread into the palm of your hand with more Peppa. You may have to repeat this process for a while after each washing. If you can't be assed to re knot them after each wash, just slap a little rubber band on the end untill the loose part has thoroughly locked.

i know that i'm barely at 2 months but they seem to be getting waaaaay to loose. I refuse to rebackcomb because i dont wanna screw up what's already dready but it's freakin me out. Patience is a virtue though. I just hope that leaving them alone is doing them good haha

Did you put rubber bands on the ends when you first back combed, to prevent them coming unravelled? And are you rubbing in new knots at the roots?

They will tighten up but it will take a good while.

I would hope you didnt use rubberbands. They suck.

time will tighten your locks. they are going to loosen up and possibly even fall out completely from your backcombing. just let it happen and in a few months, your dreads will be on their way to nice and tight. i know it's super frustrating and you feel like they'll never look the way you thought they would, but the time will go quicker than you think it will.

Thanks for the reassurance everybody. No, I didn't use rubberbands. I wanted to do it more naturally this time. no wax, no bands, just backcombing and patience.

also, does anybody find that their locks tend to be tighter if you sleep on em?

    Fair enough haha.

What i meant was: I sleep on my back and the dreads on the back of my head seem to be tighter than anywhere else. Is this a trend?

i'm not sure. i generally sleep on my stomach and the dreads on the back of my head are the tightest by far. the side of my head i lay on features i think the flatter ones, but it was also for whatever reason, the side i play with less. it all depends.
