    Quite often you don't even need to go for a proper webcam. Most digital cameras with double as a webcam, and it's not uncommon to be able to use the camera on your mobile phone when connected to your USB lead.

    You might top experiment with these options before moving on to a webcam - although basic webcams are dirt cheap now.
