I grew up in Michigan, but I love to dream of land out west. I don't think I have enough money yet. It will be another few years before I really start making money though. I want to live in the mountains or in the woods where wildlife is still mostly untouched by man. I want to grow my own food. I'd like to have 5 acres or more. I'd like to build my own small cabin for $5-6k. No electricity or running water is fine. I'm happiest doing hard manual labor. But.... I only have $30k. It may seem like a large chunk of cash to most people, but it's just not enough for what I want to do. Small tracts of land go for sometimes $10,000 an acre! Am I just not looking hard enough? Are the days of cheap, wild land really gone forever?
First off pick the states your talking about out west but I will say its getting tougher and tougher. Now down here in Missouri that would do you just fine for a nice larger tract of land in the wild.
Out West would be nice! You have to think out of the box, and work your way through this. I would say you have enough saved now, but you will have to find the location, and that could take several years. Follow your dreams, but use your mind, and all will work out for you!
It's not $10,000 an acre in areas that are still mostly untouched by man. Search for less accesible areas. Like in the middle of F'ing nowhere. It's out there man, keep looking.
You should try going to South America..land is waaay cheaper there. That, and some places are largely undeveloped. My Spanish teacher is from Chile, and he told me that beachfront property goes for $6000 an acre. I think you could find some wilderness for cheaper, and then build your house and chill! I'd be up for coming to visit, too, because I really want to live that type of lifestyle but don't know how to start! I'm always camping and caving, and I love the outdoors and doing things on my own.
One day I want to do something similar maybe. I was hoping to save enough for solar panels so I had some electricity. Land in Canada is probably cheaper than in America, I wanted to do it up north a bit where nobody lives. Good luck.
$30K is plenty. http://forgottenpa.blogspot.com/ There are places like this-abandoned cities in the middle of nowhere that can be bought for nothing. There is a lot of work but you get a building to upgrade. Start exploring. Talk to locals-gas stations-tell them you're exploring. Looking for dead cities for photos. Find buildings in the middle of nowhere. Do deed searches. It will take work. Time. But there out there. All over the country.
