I am just starting my dreads. I am going all natural and I was wondering, would it be best for me to put a bead around the sections of hair that are already tangling together or should I leave them alone and let them get tighter and leave the beads for later? Do beads actually have anything to do with tightening?

beads over loops will help smooth them out, but if your knots are just starting to form, beads can be a good way to prevent your locks from getting *too* fat (whatever that means) as they form by controlling their size early. personally, i prefer ripping to using beads, but thas jess me

ripping is no fun but necessary unless you want a big ol' beaver tail hanging off the back of your head! ;)

Beads are great at any time, in my opinion...finding some that have large enough holes is my problem...I can't get any for my thicker dreads.

Yeah, I found 3 packs of beads yesterday at the craft store that had big enough holes. There really isn't that much to choose from if you need big holed beads. Which sucks but that's where these awesome glass blowin mamas come into play...which is awesome!

Sounds groovy, I love the glass ones, but I have not yet found any for a reasonable price, I don't really fancy paying £6 -9 each!!!...and yet again the internal diameter was a problem.
I while back I bought these nice Cloisonne beads from ebay but had to send them back because I could'nt get them on any of my dreads...and it's not exactly as if mine are really thick either!!

i'll drop another plug to linnea (hummblebee.com). she makes really awesome glass beads and takes custom orders so she could make one with the right diameter. :)
