With all the hype about Thanksgiving, one can lose track of Buy Nothing Day, Friday in the States and Saturday in the rest of the world. "Timed to coincide with one of the busiest shopping days on the US retail calendar, as well as the unofficial start of the international holiday-shopping season, Buy Nothing Day has taken many shapes, from relaxed family outings, to free, non-commercial street parties, to politically charged public protests. Anyone can take part provided they spend a day without spending." While everyone else is chasing the sales on Black Friday, You could relax and, well, buy nothing. As Kalle says on the Buy Nothing site: Canada Action Update Two Kensington Market retailers in Toronto: "Left Feet" and "Heart on Your Sleeve" are closing their doors in observation of "Buy Nothing Day". They are promoting a "Sell Nothing Day!" as a stance against rampant consumerism. They believe in ethical retail, and believe that businesses have a role to play in reducing our global environmental impact. http://www.treehugger.com/2007-11-20_084718buynothing.jpg
I hate the media inspired Black friday BS. So in this case I am in support of a buy nothing day. Count me in.
I remember last year fights breaking out in stores that had a limited number of x-boxes at a low price. The people looked worse than animals fighting over dead meat. .
dammit if i need broccoli i'm gonna go buy it no matter what day it is. I make a point of not buying non-subsistence items throughout the year so that should make up for it.
Awesome. I always boycott this day...I didnt know that there was "Buy Nothing Day" The only thing I'm buying are shots when I go see my friends band play tonight
Yeah, but I only complied this time (well pretty much) because of all the media hype on 'must go spend a shitload on black friday' thing.
hey great job everyone you guys really proved ur point with this being the biggest black friday ever and all! be careful you might bring down capitalism as we know it!
