That is a good idea, Barbuchon. And with that in mind, you might want to try www.freecycle.org.

I just salvaged a bike from the curb the other week. It's a good looking bike but the frame is badly bent. Was gonna transfer parts to my bike. Think the frame back can be hammered back into place Barbuchon, like I said it's a good-looking bike, better looking than my other one.

I need a picture sister. But everything is possible, just might need different tools than a hammer since it's the frame and need a nicer job if you mind a little bit about the look of your ride. A fine hammer smash time could still do the job with a paintjob after with cheap spraypaint. That's what I do most of the time. One good time to use your creativity. People will notice you most of the time if you use original colors and patterns.

    You can pm me.

Don't hammer the frame, trash it. Its a safety issue. Metal will always maintain the memory of a bend. It can easily fail on you at the wrong time.

You don't want to be cruising down a hill and have the frame fail.

They'll be picking you off the highway with a spatula.

fuck that man, not everyone is a downhill hardcore rider. Unless she plans on doing super jumps and drops... That's not the kind bike you are looking for in the garbage. That would be stupid to trash something just because it has some minor scratch, you didn't even see a picture of the bike... Don't you care a little bit about our planets, we need to recycle... If the bike is just for riding around there's no damn problems man, I've ride fucking shitty bike downhill without no problems... damn, what's wrong with you... fuck all of you who call yourself hippie and tell people to trash everything and buy top gear shits for no reasons, I'm so sick of those kind of person, PLUS YOU ARE ON THE LIVING ON THE EARTH FORUM. Reply with what you want I don't care, like you don't care for the Earth too. I'm sure this bike is fine for the common people. Old bikes are often stronger than the new shit they sell now. I've dealth with them before, bent or not, and they are pretty decent for mostly everything. Yah, fuck off.

I'm a former professional bike mechanic. I've ridden bikes for more years than you've been alive. If you don't want to take my word about this, then don't.

    No need for nastyness.

To xexon or to yourself? I understand where you're coming from about recycling bikes rather than trashing them, but to tell anyone who shares a different opinion than you to "fuck off" doesn't really contribute much to what is supposed to be a helpful thread.

Okay, we've been hella broke and there hasn't been much for bikes on sale around here lately... but I'm back to it, and I'm contemplating buying one online, just for the ability to get WHAT I WANT. I'm looking at this one: http://www.target.com/700cc-Trekkin...iew=custReviews&asin=B000BGJQSU#RCZ5UYYUW2G66

Since I plan on only riding around town (for now, at least) and want it to be comfortable, practical, and possible for me to ride in a skirt... It has 21 speeds, a REALLY low bar, a rack behind the seat, and covers for the chain and wheels. It's a little more than I was planning to spend, especially since there'll be shipping on top of the price, but it seems like everything I want in a bike, while all my other options seem to require more compromise.

Any thoughts? Think I found a good one? :)

That looks good, but what about that 200 pound weight limit? I don't know a whole lot about bikes, but that seems a bit low for what you want to be able to do with it (transport gear or groceries on the back).

Hmm, good point. I hadn't thought of the weight of groceries. The other one I'm looking at seriously is this:
    http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=3985035

Now, I hate the idea of going through Wal-Mart, so that's strike 1 already. It also looks a little clunkier than the first one, and it's just a 7 speed instead of 21 speeds (though I'm not certain my needs will necessitate a lot of speeds, but better to have the option and not need it...). Other comparisons: The first bike, I might need to get a replacement seat for my butt's sake (but might that add to the weight limit?) and I'm unlikely to need that with the second one, the seat already looks pretty plush. But I'll need to get a rack for the second bike. When all's said and done I figure the second (purple) bike would be a bit less, but just by about $20 bucks since I found a 10% off coupon for Target.com.

I can't seem to decide which bike would be better for me. If it weren't for the weight limit I'd just go for the first one, but now I'm indecisive again!

Look for a bike co-op. There's one in my town. Generally, if you go help them do some work for a few hours, they'll give you a bike.
They work on donations of spare/recycled parts and will build a bike just for you out of what they have available.

My local co-op is starting a new project to build "ugly bikes" and leave them around town for the general public to use. The idea is you pick one up, ride it where you're going, and leave it for someone else to pick up and ride.
