I'm looking into sewing machines because I've been meaning to get one for a long time and I actually want to go through with it this time.

A few questions to those of you who sew regularly...

What kind of sewing machine should I get that would be a better bang for my buck? What kind of features should I get for the beginner/basic sewer? I saw a ton on ebay that I was thinking of getting, but it didn't say what they came with and quite honestly, I want to know what I'm buying.

Any help would be great! I have a few pairs of jeans that need a serious revamping!

My mom found me a Singer sewing maching at a garage sale. It's about 10 years old, but works great. If you are getting one used make sure you can get the instructions b/c different sewing machine brands have different ways of threading the machine and bobbin, etc. Make sure the machine comes with a bobbin and a spool for the thread.and the foot pedal. I think any brand will be good, but Singer is usually the best. Any questions just PM me.

Awesome, thanks. I'm going to start looking at thrift stores soon. A friend of mine bought a really cheap one at WalMart and she's had it for 4 or 5 years now and hasn't had a problem with it yet...if all else fails, I'll do that.

mmm well out of the 15 machines my mother had, the singers were her least favorite, because they always seem to jam so easily. husquavana is a dream, but not within a reasonable price range (some cost as much as a car!) i work at a costume shop where class is also taught, and they use janomes and they are cheap and effective.
    hope that helps!

I was wondering this same thing as I am looking to upgrade my machine. I have a singer simple and it blows. It always jams and the stitches do not look good when I do zigzag or over edge stitches.

I'll keep you posted too when I find anything out, I just started looking for real today...
