Do the various solvents used in salvia extractions pose any health risks? My understanding is most or all of the solvent's compounds are evaporated in the process prior to usage but doesn't some of the solvent's active ingredients remain? Acetone and isopropyl alcohol seem like toxic substances that would leave some traces on the final smoking product. From reading the various method, using acetone seems the easiest and safest when it is evaporated in a well ventilated area, naturally, rather than any processes that require heating and more fumes to be produced.
If evaporated properly and if the solvent is of proper purity, there should be only trace amounts in nearly undetectable levels left behind. Acetone is probably the best solvent for salvia as far as solvency and is widely available, but is toxic. Ethanol is readily available as "Everclear" brand grain alcohol and has low toxicity. Isopropyl alcohol is so so as a salvia solvent, but is also toxic. Methanol (wood alcohol) could be used but is highly toxic. I personally recommend Ethanol for all around ease of use, availability and low risk for toxicity. Beware, grain alcohol vapors will ignite. Ventilation of some kind is recommended! Do not attempt to drink grain alcohol without diluting, you will burn your mouth and throat. Note, 1/2 oz of grain alcohol with 5 oz of your favorite juice or mixxer is recommended, especially for happy hour! Witchdoctor
