Anyone heere going to winterise their bikes and try to make it through the cold seasons?
(providing you live in cold communities, like I life in winnipeg and it's pretty serious amount of cold and snow.)
I'm going to try and go as long as I can handle. the alternative is walking to the bus stop in the cold and waiting, then having to spend like 60$ a month I don't have on a bus pass.

I feel like it is a little more dangerous with ice and hard winds and stuff but that maybe I will invest in a helmet and some goggles for those stormy days.

I really enjoy biking, and bike culture; being able to sustain myself without the use of petro as much as possible, so I think it's worth a try.

    Anyone else trying this?

I love biking in the snow. I start when a lot of cars won't on a cold morning.

Keep the fingers and toes warm. Mitts are warmer than gloves. Wool socks always. Eye protection!!! Don't get frostbite. Know when to take the bus too. I've biked at 20 below zero. Its no fun.

You can also get snow tires for bikes with studs built in or you can also buy bicycle tire chains.

sweet thanks for the advice you guys! :)

I feel like -20 is like a warm-ish day during winter here so I'm going to have to learn to get really tough again. I feel like I have better chance of frostbite waiting 25 mins for a bus though. But I will be careful on blizzardy days with strong winds. And will most deffinantly need some eye protection of some sort.

I have lots of serious winter gear, I think most of all rIght now I'm mostly working on getting cyked up and prepared for the next 5-6 months of doing this. Bikeing is sort of a new-ish thing for me, I have always been a walker but I moved a little bit further away this year so some alternations needed to be made.

just as long as your being safe and properly bundled up it should be all good, ive seen what can happen if your not properly prepared for winter biking, either head injuries or getting sick, my friend flipped over the handle bars slipping on ice and cracked his head open three years ago, and this was just after he recovered from being insanely sick from not wearing the proper winter wear

After riding on snow and ice for a few weeks, you'll gain an incredibile sense of balance.

    WastingtheDawn, be careful please

in wintertime the roadways are often narrowed down due to plowed snow
taking up the space on thhe shoulder pushing the cyclist into traffic.

Get a reflective vest please it gets dark real early.

Please come back and tell us how the commute is going.

    Peace
