other wise, go to http://www.google.co.nz and search for things like immigration, citizenship etc...\

    Good luck. :)

You have to sing our anthem, name seventeen towns and pledge allegiance to our flag.;)

    *naw, I'm kidding*

I have no idea, do as stated above.:)

Only nations who are paranoid about whether their citizens love them or not need to PLEDGE their allegience.
We're like a heterosexual male who's comfortable in his sexuality and doesn't yell "I'm not gay" when his hand brushes his mates' as they reach for the beers, only with allegience instead of sexual orientation.

But then, America is lifting the McCarthyism to new heights these days.

you need to get over a certain number of points in a citizenship test. the test is not a "choose A or B..." its more of a

    Are you a qualified doctor?
    Are you a "brain surgeon"
do you have more than "$500,000"
    ....

its about what value you can add to our country by moving here, i mean we don't want no bums.

and i am serious about this BTW, thats what they do. although a lot of families get let in other ways. like by just moving here and disapearing.

actually, the pledge was written in 1892, not in the cold war or revolutionary days, when immigration was at its height(1890-1910 we had 10 million immigrants.) It was done on the 400th anniversary of columbus finding america. Only america has a pledge of allegiance to the flag, and the Philippines who copied us...so i dont think its paranoid nations..its not a nazi, commie thing, its just an american thing.

now out of curiosity..in what ways are we taking McCarthyism to new heights?

a witchhunt on terror maybe? the if you're not with us you're against us axis of evil bullshit...it's McCarthyism that has bounded out of Amrican borders and is taking over the world.

Also - of course we don't have a pledge of allegiance, we don't even have a written constitution. That said, we still (imo) have a good legal/political system of democracy, and are prepared to do wacky, world first things (like give all women in the country the vote in 1893, or elect georgina beyer (a transgender MP) to parliament.)

p.s., doug, it's not families that disappear - it's rugby teams.

well ...the 'with us or against us speech' was not the same one that mentioned the axis of evil.

Maybe i am thinking too black and white on this one...but i dont see the with us or against us dichotomy as false. either you actively fight against terrorism(abroad or at home)....or you let them grow within your borders(ala taliban, and we remember what happened to them, your nation was there to see their demise.) It wasnt American McCarthyism that brought that about, it was the largest coalition in the world that brought that about.

I think whether you agree with the US action on iraq is moot, your own actions at home are whats important. I dont believe NZers want terrorists to grow within their borders and will/have actively fought against any growth.

So i guess my question is this: where is the gray area in the 'with us or against us' statement in regards to fighting terrorism?

and yes, sophie, your nation has done many many things to be proud of, there is no doubting that.

and the after effects two speeches by the same governemnt are mutually exclusive...

anyway, I think you can have a grey area. yeah, we might not want terrorism in our garden but that doesn't mean we have to be part of an unjust war (which you cannot exclude from any discussion of the current Bush government)
I think we can absolutley disagree on things like that, yet not be 'against' each other. I think breaking it down to those terms is just using bully tactics to get countries to help in taking down whoever is currently aggravating America.

i dont see the war on terror and iraq having anything to do with each other. Although, iraq was funding the families of those who were sucide bombing in israel(but most the world doesnt care about that...).

I dont think you have to be apart of an unjust war to fight terrorism. Forget about what you do in regards to the US...if terrorism brews in NZ, are you not in essence helping terrorism by looking away with a blind eye? I dont think you have to do anything with the US to fight terror... the UK, israel, thailand, indonesia, and philippines have been fighting a war on terror far longer than the US. I dont think its bullying tactics(atleast not when it was used first, when everyone and their brother stood with the US, and even the french proclaimed themselves americans that day.) That is how american politicians speak(except clinton, but he was just too smart for his own good): in terms of bad and good. In the end, terrorism must be fought. Whether its under a global banner of unity, by the US and her close allies,by every nation individually, or by some combination therein, it must be fought. My only hope is that once the fuckup is out of office we can get back to our original alliance and go after real terrorists like al qaeda and jemiah islamiah and real nuclear threats like NK/iran instead of countries like iraq(which has brought more bad than good).

Just to do a quick POO, Altaken has hit the mark in terms of the imigration system. As someone who went through and seen many others imigrate to NZ, all I can say is it is not easy (burecratically I mean).

The points is what they use (like Australia) but what bcomesa the problem is do you have to be a permnanant resident for 2 years etc. When my grandparents imigrated, they were told one thing (2 years I think) by one person (at the imigration office) and another thing by a different person at the same office. The problem is that these laws get reviewed so regularly that if I were to tell you how I got here, it would be obsolete.

If you make your way to auckland, drop in a call

really don't know sorry. All of the internationals I know are here on study exchange programmes, like I said you'd probabaly get the best answers from a government/immigration website.
