A few weeks ago when I was at my girlfriend's Mum's house I put my feet on the coffee table while I was there to relax.
The dirty soles of my bare feet were on display to everyone and I wondered later what people must have thought seeing my feet like that.
Is it rude to show the soles of your feet when they are dirty from going barefoot?
The soles of my feet are usually dirty as I hardly ever wear shoes and I usually don't mind people looking at them, my girlfriend likes the dirty sole look.

Personally I wouldn't do that in front of others, even if they're clean, as I think it's rude. In front of a gf maybe, but not her parents, etc.

I kind of think it's rude and don't often. Somedays my soles are as black as tar and I don't feel like making anyone aware of how I may be soiling their carpets. I guess it's mostly an issue when visiting people. I don't mind it at my place at all. My soles are pretty used so if folks look they'll probably think I run around barefooted everywhere all the time. They'd be right !

My girlfriend likes it when I go shoeless to her Mum's house because she says by going barefoot I am showing humility and respect.
Since feet are so personal my girlfriend likes that I show off my bare soles because she says it shows I am being open and unashamed to be myself.
Instead of trying to impress by wearing expensive shoes instead I am showing my bare feet.
But I am always keen to hear other peoples thoughts about bare feet and what is acceptable.

I really agree with what you said nakedfeetguy. Going barefoot says that we are comfortable with ourselves and don't buy into the notion that in order to feel validated we must wear expensive shoes made in some overseas sweatshop to impress others.

it is the right behavior if you plan to make barefooting appear in a bad light. yes, it is rude and unnecesssary. more than this, in some eastern cultures (Thailand, which BTW is a very pro-barefooting country) it is regarded as an insult.

Your girlfriend supports you that's great. You are lucky to have such an openminded person to share your interest.

I think pointing your soles at someone is an insult in Nepal also. (It might be religious)
I however, think those barefoot porters on Mt. Everest have awesome looking soles. They barefoot on rocky trails carring heavy loads and often barefoot through the snow. Some of the toughest, strongest and healthy looking feet.

Just to be clear, I have no problem with people going to other houses barefoot. Girls wear flipflops and sandals all the time, and if asked to take off their shoes, they'll end up... GASP barefoot!!! lol

I was just talking about the putting feet on the table. Barefoot in general I have no problem with.

Although others (aka anti-barefooters) might. :)

For the most part, I would never put my barefeet up on someones coffee table either, unless I was told otherwise it was ok to do so. Kind of agree it can be considered rude.

In most parts of Asia, pointing one's soles at another is considered very rude and in Thailand, putting one's feet at the level of someone else's head is a supreme insult. Bare feet, on the other hand, are no big deal.

I'd say keep the feet bare, but don't prop them on other's tables.

It kind of annoys me when ANYBODY puts their feet up on my table... Be it bare, shod, or socked. It's just kind of rude.

So keep them bare, but on the floor.
