I try to stay away from dairy b/c I know it doesn't like me and my doctor recently told me to stay away from soy products. I tried hemp milk, its great, so no problem there. I have my tofutti "sour cream" oh, wait... tofutti=tofu=soy. Crap! Well, you see my problem here. I love sour cream and I am also looking for a good yogurt substitute that isn't soy or dairy... any suggestions or am I SOL? By the way... has anyone noticed that soy is in everything?! Almost as annoying as trying to avoid sugar/high fructose corn syrup. GAR! Does this mean I can't have soy sauce? That is just a stupid question... I'm reaching here.
Unfortunately for those who wish to avoid soy almost all substitutes are made from soy. You can find milk made from a wide range of things and there are some non-dairy soy free ice creams, but most other commerically available products are soy based. BUT, if it can be made with soy it can probably be made with something else. You probably won't find it at the store, but homemade is better for you anway. I have heard of a few people making yogurt from coconut milk. I have not tried it but if interested you should be able to find a recipe online. I have never heard of a non-dairy soy free sour cream, but maybe you can find a recipe for one as well.
Thanks for your help... I've never heard of rice butter before... but I never really used butter anyway. If I wanted it I'd probably just refrigerate some olive oil till it got all hard...
Just an update, I found rice yogurt at my local health food store. I havn't tried it yet, and forget the brand name, but I plan on trying it the next time I go to the store. I'll let you all know how it goes.
actually I am allergic to soy...but I still eat it, so I think its ok. Did your doctor give you a reason for avoiding it? If not then I think you should be fine.
