I need to read more. I didn't post this in a particualr sub-forum because I'm not looking for ANY particular type of book, I just need to read more, I haven't read like any whole books in the last few years. I tend to like fiction, but I'm looking for any really good recommendations, something that will keep my attention, what books blew your mind, what are your favorite books.

Here's some of the books I have liked

    100 Years of Solitude
    Stranger in a Strange Land
    Jitterbug Perfume
    Things Fall Apart
Ancient Secret of the Flower of Life
    Neverwhere
    Clockwork Orange
    2001, 2010, 2061
    Farenheit 451

Not alot of non-fiction in that list, huh? Unless you count FOL:huh: ? I read most of those in High School.

So again please make some suggestions, if you can till me a little about the book that would be cool i know i didn't, but if you have any Q's about those books or what i liked about them, just asked.

I spose I would be kinda excited to read a nonfiction piece that was really worth the read.

    THANKS!

Jack Kerouac's more accessible work would suit your taste, so maybe - "On the Road" or "The Dharma Bums." Both are stories about living freely. Something more modern that would be good is Haruki Murakami's "Sputnik Sweetheart" or "Kafka on the Shore". His work is very nostalgic & surreal with elements of romance.

If you want non-fiction journalism type material, then why not get into the new journalism authors like Hunter S Thompson/Tom Wolfe/Capote. Check their bio in wikipedia to see what kind of stories they cover. You'd definitely want to read "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" (nearly everyone has) and maybe "In Cold Blood".

Fear and Loathing is a very good read. I also recommend Dostoevsky's Notes From Underground. It's an amazing work, especially the first half. If you haven't already, read the Harry Potter books. I stopped after the fourth one, but during my next vacation I think I'm going to read the fourth one to the end of the series.

And for good non-fiction, one of my favorite books is Stephen Pinker's The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial of Human Nature. It's about evolutionary psychology, and debunks the three most famous theories of mind: the tabula rasa, the noble savage, and the ghost in the machine. It did a lot for me in terms of my worldview. Not so much because Pinker espouses a particular one through out, but he gave me a lot of raw materials from which to form one.

Right now I'm reading novels by Graham Swift.

'Learning to Swim and Other Stories'
    'Out of this World'
    'Waterland'
    'Tomorrow'
    'Last Orders'
    'Ever After'
    'Shuttlecock'

I don't know if you like Virginia Woolf, G. Swift writes in about the same style.

Something different from the above that I lately read and enjoyed:
    'Glenarvon' by Caroline Lamb
    'Paul Clifford' by Edward Bulwer-Lytton

The new best non-fiction books I've read lately have been "Guns, Germs, and Steel" by Jared Diamond and Gulag by Anne Applebaum.

    Both won the pulitzer, actually.

fiction: Of Human Bondage by W. Somerset Maugham. read it twice. Most other fiction is pretty subjective. I don't like most of today's fiction because the language seems so primitive comapared to 19th cent. british lit. People got too focused on plot and forgot about the art of semantic expression

nonfiction: Earth in the Balance by Al Gore, The Virtue of Selfishness by Ayn Rand. Then there's a new one I haven't read by last name Weisman. I think it's called if we weren't here or something. It's a thought experiment about a possible extinction of the human race and how the world will be. Basically it'd be like man wasn't even here.

The Peaceful Warrior Collection. 2 in 1 book. By Dan Millman. Seriously. this will help you evolve spiritually.

maybe get some 1984 by George Orwell in there as well.

little bit of Tom Robbins as well. His best in my opinion are Another Roadside Attraction, and Still Life with Woodpecker. So i give a list.

The Peaceful Warrior Collection - Dan Millman
Still Life with Woodpecker - Tom RobbinsAnother Roadside Attraction - Tom Robbins.
    1984 - George Orwell
