In 1937 from the man Harry J. Anslinger by saying that "This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relations with Negroes, entertainers, and any others." this is just a small quote from this man but its the underlying truth of why marijuana is illegal.... I am just curious how many people knew this?? This was the original start of making marijuana illegal. It something as absurd as this that made this very helpful plant illegal. Marjuana has been illegal for less then 1% of the times its been in use. Its hard to imagine that a plant that can help people in so many different ways was made illegal in this manner. I first heard about how marijuana was made illegal from Barry Coopers Never Get Busted Again DVD. Since then I have also read alot more about it. I cant even begin to explain everything. I just wanted to post the links to the sites that I thought gave the most information about this. www.nevergetbusted.com http://blogs.salon.com/0002762/stories/2003/12/22/whyIsMarijuanaIllegal.html http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Why_is_marijuana_illegal http://supak.com/hemp/hemp.htm I would like to hear if people knew that this was the first reason why marijuana was illegalized. I wouldnt have expected something like this to still back up why this useful plant is still illegal now. There are so many different uses then even medical. All of these websites give alot of detail into this I found it really interesting.
Yeah, I heard about this while watching the History channel. Funny how this all started with racial discrimination, yet WE are the "bad people" and the people who made the law were "doing the right thing"... Hypocrites...
Yes, I am very familiar with Aslingers anti-marijuana crusade... Funny, how Aslinger had no problem dosing unsuspecting people with LSD during his work with MK-ULTRA- the CIA's experiments on unknowing participants with LSD, and its possible effects as a truth syrum. Or how he steadily arranged for a supply of morphine for Senator Joseph McCarthy.... I'm all too familiar with the criminalization, decriminalization, and recriminalization of marijuana in this country. I suggest you check out "Reefer Madness!: Sex, Drugs, and Cheap Labor in the American Black Market" by Eric Schlosser. It covers marijuana in detail, from its earliest recorded uses, to the ridiculous drug war we are currently tangled up in. If you're interested in finding out more about why marijuana is viewed the way it is today; I suggest you read that book. Eye opening to say the least.
i just wanted to post about this because it seems like such a buried part of the history of marijuana. so many things from a textiles standpoint can be made from hemp that we dont use to the extent that we could today. its funny how in the 1700s it was illegal to not grow hemp. if was more widely used for making products we could use we wouldnt have to depend as much on say cotton or corn products. there isnt many people that grow hemp because the government could just say that it contains thc.
If the people who think of weed as "bad" soely because it's illegal found out about this they'd probably change their ways. Or probably not...I dunno.
Aslinger didnt even think that marijuania should be legalized. However he was assigned by the incumbent president (Roseavelt i believe) to find a reason to outlaw weed. I saw a whole special on it on The History Channel. Mexican illigal-imigration also played a large role in making it illegal as well.
I watched that same special, jusdino. Have you seen the others involving the "club drugs", coke, and heroin? I think there might've been a few other specials on a couple of other drugs too but I can't remember. That horrendous Reefer Madness added stigma to weed as well. Has anyone seen it? They act as if they're going through heroin withdrawals.
Marijuana was turned illegal because of mexicans smoking and causing troubles in towns in the early days. It wasnt because white women got horny but that mexicans and other races would get "rowdy". History Channel.
