We've been composting for a while now, and Love it. To make a long story short.. As of January 2008, our town will banish plastic bags. Which is great! I love it, so ive been trying to come up with ways to dispose of all the other garbage other than using plastic bags. My idea was to use news paper to line my garbage with, and then roll it up and put it in the garbage bin.. but the only thing we put in the garbage is everything that cant be composted.. which is wet and gross, cereal, peanut butter and the such. Okay, SO we decided to Gar-Post. We have a seperate compost containter for everything other than veggies, fruit, coffee grinds etc. So far its not stinky (unless your nose is right up in it) and we figure its got to de-compose anyways, right? So far our garbage has only consisted of a few diapers (cloth at day, disposable at night) Anyone else already do this? Or know how long it would take for say, chicken bones to decompose??
Why would you separate your things to be composted? Why wouldn't you put it all in one bin? Just throw anything organic in there and it will decompose. Granted some things take longer than others but it will decompose. I can't really say how long it takes bones to break down as I don't eat anything that contains them. I use to be careful about what I put in the compost as well, but it seemed rather wasteful to just throw things in a landfill that will decompose just fine in the compost pile. So now I put all food "waste" in the compost. It seems to be doing just fine as usual.
yeah a proper compost should be able to break down any kind of food waste really. Just so long as you don't get it to the point where it's unbalanced. Like... yah know don't dump a ton of bones or something in there.
