Its pretty wild! I saw it when I was 15 so dont remember much. Especiall ybecause I was stoned and drinking beer at the time!
i agree whole heartedly, spooner. every now and then SOMEONE has to bring up fear & loathing or listening to dark side of the moon while watching the wizard of oz or something like that. yeah yeah. got it.
regardless of it's popularity and the things that people constantly say...I found it a really enjoyable book to read and an entertaining movie.
I fucking love that movie! I still need to get the book from my friend Hannah though. Everyone says it was way better than the movie. they also said Fight Club the book was better than the movie. I gotta check them books out something....
Greatest movie of all time! i read both books and their good. i watched that movie 4 times in a row on 5 hits of sid. "i dream therefore i am not"
Nothing makes a good book like the absence of methaphor, symbolism, or any literary devices altogether. But wait - let's spoon feed you the message that doing drugs makes you unique and original and non-conformist. This book isn't sold for quality, it's sold for a stereotype and you retards guzzle it up like a fat kid at a serve-yourself icecream dessert bar. If you absolutely have to read HST, read the Rum Diary; it's the only thing he managed to write before commiting mental suicide with a sheet of acid.
I cant comment on the book, I never read it. The movie has many boring parts, but some of it is hilarious. But Spooner, is it really commiting mental suicide to eat a lot of acid? Or do you just not understand his perspective? Not saying that I do, or that I suggest everyone take psychedelics in order to become original or non-conformist, but I also would not be so quick to judge someone as insane, retarded, or whatever you were insinuating with your post. I do agree with you that a lot of people who watch the movie do so because its popular with the drug user culture, and really have no actual grasp on what is actually being depicted in the film. But there are moments in it that are extremley funny, and perhaps even insightful? The reflection he has about how LSD destroyed the very culture it promised to save, although in my opinion is very poorly written, does have a point, and if anything those two characters dont exactly come off as role models for aspiring psychonauts. Im not really a big fan of Hunter or that movie, but I dont hate it either.
he did alot more than a sheet, i think a 1/4 of a gram of crystal (im not sure tried to find it on google but couldnt)
Dude that book was chock full of metaphor and symbolism. that's actually just about all it was. I agree it wasn't as good as The Rum Diary or Hell's Angels, but i don't think it was drug sensationalism at all. The way they came into a city full of sin and filth, and behaved in a way that made even the filthy turn their heads. The drugs seemed to me to be the stabilizing factor that kept these two "non-conformists" fit in in such an insane place as Las Vegas. Vegas represented the American Dream (get rich quick), and any intelligent human would have to be in a daze to buy into it. That's only the tip of the iceberg. It wasn't his greatest book, but Thompson shit gold. The man was brilliant his literature and observations on literature and politics were brilliant. I can't say that I agree 100% with his taste for movies, because i really liked the movie. To say that he committed mental suicide sounds like an observation of someone with no brain cells to spare to begin with. No doubt the drugs took some toll on him mentally and emotionally, but it was a sacrifice he made to produce the writings he did (maybe sacrifice is the wrong word because he seemed to be having a hell of a time). What I'm driving at is he only committed suicide once. Read his suicide note it's a pretty beautiful little piece. Maybe I'll post it on here later, but thinking about his suicide is bumming me out so i'm gonna leave this thread alone for a minute.
vegas doesn't represent "get rich quick." never did. it's called sin city for a reason. and the drugs didn't make them fit in, it made them lower and grosser than the vast majority of the people there to enjoy sin. if anything, the entire story is an indictment of drug induced loserness.
and, btw, that's what makes it so annoying when stonors and trippers worship it so much without ever fully comprehending that THEY'RE the ones being mocked and judged by it.
9 times out of 10.....you either love it or you hate it. The post above is the first middle-ground stance I've ever heard on Fear and Loathing or HST in General. I agree that a lot of people get into his stuff for the wrong reasons....because it's the cool thing to do.....because they want to be cool with the drug crowd...etc etc. But not me. I found a copy of the movie and rented it before I ever knew who HST was. I just liked Johnny Depp so I rented it. I fell in love with Thompsons style and have been reading his stuff ever since. Only a couple of my friends like it, most of them think I am a crazy loon for getting into it.
i hate it when people can't tell they're being mocked and derided. it's embarassing. he was the most miserable human being on the face of the planet, and his "fans" were too fucked up to notice.
