    Hey guys.

I'm thinking of performing at some open mike nights near me and I was wondering if anyone had any tips or advice for performing in them.

Also has anyone got any good stories from previous experiences in them?

My first bit of advice would be to go in their with confidence. Unless you've got a group of friends somewhere in the crowd, Open Mic Nights can be a bit intimidating and some crowds are less than friendly. Just do various songs, not too many slow ones, they'll lose interest no matter how good you are, and not too many screamy-loud ones either. If you can, add one cover song that appeals to your crowd, and one you like to play. If you look like you're having fun, more than likely they will too. :)

open means open to whatever art you think is . my name is mike and last week i started an open-MIKE down at nancy's pub . it was pretty wild for the regulars . one disgusted woman went right up and took away our drunken drummer's stick ... so then he just beat it with his fist . eventually we hit the ecstacy ... we take our sweet and free time getting there . it's in the freedom that all people really find what they need , and in that freedom for the musician there can be some explosive angst and a healthy disreguard for the role of entertainer .

I have a website that does some justice to my old self, that would get in a dress and get made up....then sing some upraantous hilarity about nothing in a matter of words. Made it all up, wax lyrical. Utter Bollocks really but you can check it out when I find it.

    Where do you live?

That would be cool to see.

I'm from Belfast in Northern Ireland. It ain't got much in the way of places to gig but an open mike night has started up nearish me so its wat made me start thinkin about gettin out and playin to a crowd.

I used to play in a band a while back and we gigged quite a bit but the idea of goin out on stage by myself is a lot more scary than with a group.

last night we had our second open session at the pub . the music was still pretty wild , but somehow our detemination from the first time won the night before anyone even played the first inkle of a twang . even the crusty old-timers drunk on their stools in the same old places hung on happy . i so believe music is spirit and spirit need ever be just what it is . especially it's something always in motion , like the wind .

open mics are my favorite! You get to see all this great music and perform...perfection...

But ya, just be confident. Like sometimes i've played and everyone watched and was really into it and it was amazingg and fulfilling, other times I swear noone could hear me cause they were beingg too drunk and tlaking too loud.

I'd advice going early to gget a good spot on the list. I used to only ever get to play at like closing time for like 8 hardcores after everyone went home and that was a lot less fun then playing for a full bar.

    Good luck! have fun!

Don't get too drunk if you're feeling nervous - it will make matters worse because you will make all the mistakes you drank because you were nervous of making but wouldn't have made if you hadn't drunk! If that makes sense... I speak from experience here.

Personally, I like to smoke some weed beforehand and then maybe have 1 or 2 beers but that's just what works for me.
