I know that washing your dreads is necessary, and I do wash mine about once a month. I am sure some of you are going to think that once a month is gross and should be done a lot more but...

everytime I wash mine my dreadies poof out, and seem to loosen up a fuckton... they start tangling all over, and it takes about a week or so for them to settle back down and not all stick together.

I use KnottyBoy shampoo... but I dunner, maybe that stuff's no good?

I wring out each dread of excess water after washing, and then either dry them in the sun/wind if it's nice out, or blow dry them... is it maybe the way that I am drying them that makes them act a fool???

I dread (no pun intended) washing my babies every month because they get so uncontrollable... I'm constantly having to rip them apart (OUCH!) after washing because the take on a velcro like nature.

Any suggestions? Or is this just normal and something I have to cope with?

Btw, mine are about 5 months old.

i dunno, mine are like that all the time lol. i think you might just have to live with it. knotty boy is good shampoo, i used to have some and its got nice stuff in it if i remember correctly. you could try a different shampoo though, or maybe you need to dilute the knotty boy. anyway, i dont think washing every month is gross, thats about how often i wash mine. once your hair is adjusted to infrequent washings, it really doesnt get very greasy :)

i always blow dry mine, because otherwise they take forever to dry and I hate the feeling of heavy wet dreads. I only ever wash mine if they smell (smoke, work, etc), they rarely get greasy.
Maybe try putting some aloe in after you wash it. Should make them softer and less poofy.

Thanks for the advice and personal experiences, girls :)

Yeah mine don't get too greasy too quickly or anything... I like them a bit greasy anyway because then they are a bit settled down

I think a big part of it is that my dreads are still pretty short (just at my shoulders) so there isnt enough hair to weigh them down... so I'm guessing when I wash them, which kind of gets rid of many of the natural oils I had acquired, it probably makes them lighter and therefore poof up, I dk.

I do hope they grow soon!!! I am waiting patiently...
