I saw a stop sign with the words "the war" neatly stenciled right below the word "STOP" and realised that the people that did it could probably do dozens of signs like that in one night. Pretty good idea.
I've been planning on doing that for soooo long... along with STOP discrimination, violence, hate, etc. I saw one with "the war" at my high school a few years ago. Everyone should just go out there and do it, I'm definitely going to
Peta gives out stickers that say "Eating Animals" so people can put them on stop signs... lol. But how does vandalism solve anything? Doesn't it just make people think that we're all "trouble-makers?"
my philosophy is that if i can plant a seed in a person or give them an idea they've never had it is worth it. it can also be inspiring to other activist that may feel isolated or disheartened in the fight against war, racism, capitalism etc.... a good idea is using a paint pen which can be lifted from wal mart or a craft store to write on things. another idea along the stop sign is a do not enter sign and put iran or iraq as i did in the run up to the war.
yeah i think its awsome im gonna try to find some bumper stickers that say it so i can just stick it on i've seen ones around that have bush underneath the stop sign - def a fan of those
Thanks for answering my questions, brother. When you put it that way, it does make more sense. I still have some questions, and I'm still not sure how I feel about this issue, but I just wanted to let you know that I've already started doing some research/reading on it. Gracias! And I actually think it'd be cool if someone started a separate thread on "vandalism" and its use in protests... :/
yea i used to be real big on stenciling and banner drops and other graffiti but i've slacked off lately. i need to get back into that. i can direct you to some anarchist links on vandalism and other forms of direct action if thats your thing.
Sure, that would be great. I'm not actually an anarchist, but it'd still be interesting to see the different forms of vandalism and why/how people do these sorts of things. I was looking up stuff on vandalism, and somehow, I got distracted by something known as "culture jamming"... lol.
i lost alot of my links when i switched computer heres one that is kind of a how to http://visualresistance.org/wordpress/zine/stencils
I have mixed feelings about vandalism. When it comes to something like painting protest signs I don't have a problem with it, but I vividly remember the WTO protest I participated in in Seattle in 1999 where some people started smashing store windows and it gave the police all the excuse they needed to start performing all kinds of violence against the thousands of peaceful protesters who had done nothing wrong. Some people think the extra publicity it created was a good thing for the cause, but as far as I can see it just made all the protesters look like a bunch of hoodlums in the mind of the public, and get innocent people hurt and arrested by the police.
There's a broad line between meaningful placement of harmless stickers to protest an unjust war and violent destruction of private property to protest political inevitibility. I see the "STOP the War" stickers all over MD, DC and VA. I also see two and three color stencils on the sidewalks all over WDC to protest the WTO and other ridiculous things that our Chimp in Charge has gratuitously involved our country. Everyone sees the signs, no one sees the sidewalks except the homeless people sleeping there. Carry the message TO the people, not AT them.
There's still an old stop sign in my neighborhood that wears the old spray painted Iran motto, back from when the hostages were held. Guess the city fathers think it holds up today under the new boogeyman/Iran nuclear threat. Or they are too cheap and lazy to replace defaced signs. Shit it's been there for 20 years...I'd rather see war in it's place. Do your thing kids and maybe your signs will still be up 20 years from now. Maybe people will stop and think.
one of my personal favorites is just a funny one. Someone put hammer time under the word stop. STOP Hammer Time!! i laughed for a good 5 min. after i saw that.
I was driving today to lunch and I drove down a street and the stop sign said just that. STOP with the words "the war" spraypainted under it. Do you live in Stillwater, OK by some odd chance? Its rather odd as oklahoma is super conservative (I can't wait to get out of here).
I've been thinking about doing some chalking on my campus sometime... but the school policy prohibits chalking (and basically all other forms of free speech). Does anyone know what could happen to me if I get caught? How likely is it that they would suspend or expel me?
if your school has cameras wear a hoody with a bandana cowboy style over your face. And for chalking i doubt you'll get expelled. Probably just told yo go back to your dorm or you can always claim not to go there and run. It's easy not to get caught
Haha. I don't know why, but the mental image of me getting caught by a rent-a-cop, wearing a hoodie and bandana, mid-chalking... that's hilarious. Rent-a-cop: Are you aware that chalking is prohibited on this campus? Me: I'M NOT A STUDENT HERE! [runs away] But maybe you guys are right... if I go at some ridiculous time in the morning and stay away from rent-a-cops and the five billion lamps on campus, then I should be fine (I hope). I don't think we have many cameras here. We're mostly Catholic, so I don't think student crimes or activism are really a problem. haha. Thanks for the help/advice.
