i believe that promoting a religion is counter-productive :)

    religions that promote themselves, ie go out and find converts are much more successful today than religions that don't. compare the christians, muslims, and buddhists to the Jews, Druze and Zoroastrians.

    Depends how you define 'success' - in terms of the numbers game they may be ahead, but does that really mean much?

    Given the sad state of the world it's hard to see that any of them had had much success.

    in terms of the overall life of the religion, numbers has a meaning. it is also incredibly important to the financial health and power of the religion.

    of course i'm viewing religions the same as, say, bacteria. phenomena evolving , mutating and adapting across time.
    and bacteria is very successful (in evolutionary terms).

    Yes, bacteria are very successful - they actually do cause diseases. Religion on the other hand has failed miserably to bring peace or human unity.
