maybe a better question would be; would you rather be grand and sad or typical and happy?

what you are saying is kinda what i was getting at with the last two comments BUT not entirely

being grand doesnt automatically make you typical

Well no it doesnt, i was using the word 'grand' to describe a situation/lifestyle/life that wasn't typical...

I dig street kid's question just as it is, and I totally understand it. I lot of people might quibble that 'sad' and 'typical' are not really in opposition. That doesn't mean you might not have one without the other.

I think an even better question might be "Would you rather be an intellectual and sad or stupid and happy?" Because what is it to be grand? Has a human being ever really been grand, in the grand scheme of things? Probably not. The people we fawn over are probably as dumb as dumb can be.

That said, I think the existential, intellectual weirdo type can have a certain joy in his/her despair that a non-thinker can't appreciate.

I, myself, have chosen (or not), to think too much. And it's sustainable. 98% of the fun is in the maddening persevering. It can seem hard, but I think the things you learn from it are worth it.

would you rather go along depressed to get along, or live in your own imagination, not bothering anybody and not wishing to be?

would you rather live in a world where everyone can be both at peace, AND find gratification, or one where everyone goes arround trying to impress each other and lives everyday with anxiety, finding little or no real gratification, and occasionally not even survival?

the intellect isn't your enimy. aggressiveness is.

i'd rather be sad. great art can come from sadness. to be typical is a waste of life. besides, maybe there's something to be sad about and that's ok.

i'd rather be wierder then shit and happy as a lark. and i do believe it is those two that go togather. and that gratuitous conventionality is the mother of depression! especially cultures that romantacize and reward the aggressiveness of it. (but please don't confuse gratuitous conventionality with indiginous traditions, these are two very different things also, often nearly opposites as well)
