In evaluating a book like Mein Kampf one should distinguish between good and evil, and between truth and falsehood. Adolf Hitler was arguably the most evil man who ever lived. Nevertheless, he could not have achieved his evil if he had been mistaken about everything. Of course, he was mistaken about the Jews. He said they dominated the sex industry. This was untrue. He said they shirked military duty during World War I. This, too, was untrue. I read somewhere that more Jews died defending Germany in World War I than in all of Israel’s wars. At the very least, German Jews did their part. Ann Frank's father was a German lieutenant on the Western Front. Nevertheless, Hitler had a great deal of insight into social psychology. He said that the spoken word, rather than the written word, is the way to appeal to large numbers of people. In Mein Kampf he wrote, “The great masses’ receptive ability is only very limited, their understanding is small, but their forgetfulness is great. As a consequence of these facts, all effective propaganda has to limit itself to a very few points and to use them like slogans until even the very last man is able to imagine what is intended by such a word.” I am not claiming moral equivalency by pointing out that Rush Limbaugh uses this method. He begins his program by reading a few news stories likely to anger his ditto heads. Then he spends the rest of his program receiving calls from his followers in which they explain how angry they are about the events and liberals mentioned in the news stories. Mein Kampf is not a dangerous book. No one who does not already hate Jews will hate them because of reading this book. Hitler acknowledges that he did not hate the Jews until he failed in his efforts to become an artist or an architect. It was not until then that he needed to hate.
I say if your gonna bash the man, read his book first. I think he was fucking nut but he had some pretty good ideas. Anyway... I say read it.
chapters, a major canadian bookstore chain, won't sell the book because their CEO is jewish or something. I think that thats BULLSHIT because, no matter who it offends, it is interesting and important to examine the minds of people like Hitler. Bashing books and pretending they never existed kind of hinders the development of literature.
I've read Mein Kampf (the 2 volume editon) and I find it is a very good book, and I understand the idealogy of "National Socialism", what person wouldn't stand up for their country?
In a nutshell, boring. This guy goes on and on and on to no real end. Not worth the paper it's written on. If you like political page turners, I could recommend anything by Doestoevsky (Brothers Karamozov particularly), Orwell, or even Tolkien for that matter. The guy has no interesting political philosophy and all he does is vent like any other felon in prison. If you want to read it for its historic value, then do so..otherwise don't bother cos it's a waste of time.
"in the size of the lie there is always contained a certain factor of credibility, since the great masses of a people may be more corrupt in the bottom of their hearts than they will be consciously and intentionally bad, therefore with the primitive simplicity of their minds they will more easily fall victims to a great lie than to a small one." - Adolf Hitler, from Mein Kampf, Chapter X, "The Causes of the Collapse" One can see how the Republican Party benefits from this truth. Since 1980 the GOP has been lying about the revenue building benefits of tax cuts. Republican politicians continue to pretend that the next round of tax cuts will generate so much economic growth that they will pay off the national debt without cutting popular middle class entitlements. Republicans believe the lies of John McCain and Sarah Palin, even after journalists have exposed them.
Researchers from the University of Hamburg, who are conducting an international study on the perceptions of democracy among young people around the world, have found that Hitler is one of the heroes of Palestinian youth. The French news agency, Agence France Presse, reports Mein Kampf, the infamous work in which Adolph Hitler explains his hatred of Jews, reached number six on the Palestinian best-seller list... When Israeli forces overran Arafat's bases in southern Lebanon in 1982, they found many copies of Mein Kampf, in Arabic, among the PLO terrorists' belongings. The Middle East Media and Research Institute (MEMRI) has more details on the sale of Adolph Hitler's Mein Kampf in eastern Jerusalem and the Palestinian autonomy. The Arabic translation is being distributed by Al-Shurouq, a Ramallah-based book distributor, and is now in 6th place on the Palestinian best-seller list. The cover of the book shows a picture of Hitler, a swastika, and the title in both German and Arabic. Following are some excerpts of the introduction by translator Luis Al-Haj: "The National Socialism that Hitler preached for and whose characteristics were presented in his book My Struggle [Mein Kampf]... this National Socialism did not die with the death of its herald. Rather, its seeds multiplied under each star... Fascination with Hitler is nothing new for the Arabs. The Mufti of Jerusalem, Haj Amin el-Husseini, spent the Holocaust years in Berlin, where he was an active Nazi collaborator; he is still revered as a hero among the Palestinian Arabs today." http://www.al-ghoul.com/mein_kampf.htm
