maybe most are. but i get so frustraited when people don't know who this people and bands are. john lennon, donovan, collective soul, the black crowes, the counting crows, etc im like "oh yeah i have john lennon tattooed on my foot" "whos that?" ARE YOU FKN KIDDING ME!!!! it drives me crazy. im scared that when im older people my age will have kids and those kids won't know anything about the 60's 70's or won't know any music older than 10 years. dskhhgjfhfg if you understand where im coming from. my children will know good music and what a cassette tape was.
so how much do you know about your grandparents' music? sure knowledge is a good thing in most any form, but is there really something so special about a cassette tape that it must be passed down through the generations? anyway, most people are dumb, no matter what the age
Aw you sound like such an old fogey. Yes the 60s and 70s were a music phenomenon, but dont disregard what is happening in this time now.
Don't confuse stupidity with a lack of information. I find most people to be fairly intelligent but how can they possibly know what hasn't been taught them? Our musical exposure is determined largely by an industry whose main purpose is to sell- and it ain't Beatles that they aim to peddle.
The Counting Crows suck. Other than that... eventually you learn to realize that people of all ages are dumb.
Incorrect... they're programmed to act stupid. People will reflect the information/propaganda fed to them.
Then why are there a few people who can reject the programming? I think that it's a matter of intelligence. I've seen many kids here at school come from the same small town religious background, yet a few just got past it and developed wonderful individualistic personalities.
I just dont think you can call someone stupid because they dont listen to the same music as you. To me, that comment is asinine. Not to mention...I just dont think you can say most everyone is stupid. I beg to differ. Most people are just really passive and don't try to look beyond what is surrounding them. Ignorant, perhaps, but not stupid. It's so disgustingly snobby to say so.
nope, all of them are... i remember when i was 17...and the dumb shit i was...im sure when im in my 30's ill look back at my 20's the same way...
because it is hard to break the social programming you grow up with. lots of people don't realize theres a whole world out there - they only know what they grew up with. sure, they may learn some things about ancient societies, but i know from my education in school we learned jack squat about mainstay cultures of this day and age. so it may include intelligence, but i also think its a fear to challenge the societal norms you grew up with.
ok maybe i didnt word everything correctly but you know where i am coming from. and i do know whats going on today its so hard to put it all in the right words with out someone biting my head off
Simple word choice can communicate unintended things. No It's a matter of being willing to question what is presented as self-evident. Just because someone has a particular taste in music doesn't mean they are intelligent or dumb. If someone chooses a particular spiritual path it's because they feel comfortable with a given belief. I've met some deeply religious people who also happened to be quite intelligent and I've seen some who turned their back on a religious upbringing who also showed a lack of wisdom. It's not ability to question as much as it is willingness to do so. Of course, it's also the ability to choose one's battles and I'm aware that I'm likely not going to dissuade you of your opinion, Pavel so I'll just rest my case here and move on.
but yeah, this thread seems to be pointing more to uneducated teens that dont really give a shit to want to know who john lennon or bob marley are. because theyre caught up in their years. you can enjoy the 60s and the 70's, but it is 2007 to be 2008. and at your age FADS are very popular, and peer pressure, etc. its cool if you want to be your own person, but those people arent stupid. they just dont know their hippy history, basicaly because they dont give a fuck, and they want to know if nicole richie is going to finally eat a sandwich, or who paris hilton is spreading the VD to.
I'm not supporting what the OP said. Judging someone's intelligence based on their music preferance is pretty dumb within itself; although I must admit that you can tell ALOT about a person by their taste in music and movies. I could probably tell you how intelligent a person is just by reading their facebook profile. Yes, there are intelligent religious people out there... but I have to semi-agree with Fitz... it's just a matter of challanging what seems to be self-evident. Yet, I still think that challanging it is a statement of intelligence by itself.
I've noticed that college kids have no cultural knowledge or common sense. I walk around school and all I hear is gossip and bullshit. Drives me nuts!
