well....i always wanted to ask a real hippie how was it really those days...i mean...sometimes when i talk with my friends they say hippies were just a bunch of people high most of the time, smelly and not doing anything smart....i always argue with them beacuse i believe this wasn`t so.... now i`m aksing you to tell me truth...was it like that?were hippies only doing drugs, doing nothing throughout the day and not cleaning themselves??
Hippies aren't all the same person (obviously). So if you think about it they probably weren't all doing the same. I'm sure there were one or two that actually did clean themselves. And there probably also were a few sober ones.
Some hippies were like that. And a lot of straights were like that too. Still are. Some hippies just protested and wore costumes and enjoyed "getting in the Man's face". A lot hippies moved to the hills and planted gardens and fired pottery and wove cloth. But you didn't hear about _those_ hippies in the Media. The Establishment _really_ didn't want the kids to start thinking there was an alternative to working in the mills and factories. Bad for business. LIttlefoot
i guess there was hostility against the "hippies" because they were different, and people are afraid of those things that are different.
well,I wasnt born back then, but I think that many hippies were sensitive, very smart and clean but there were also many of them that were smelly, dumb and high 24/7. but they were like that not because of being hippies but because they were that way,its more of a individualism matter, not everyone acted the same way.
I was high a lot in my early years, too much. I did, however bathe reguarly. I also generally held a steady job and frequently worked my ass off. I did change jobs a fair amount, but a lot of that was because I moved around the country a fair bit. I also did quite a few things that weren't smart, but I think that was mainly due to age and maturity.
Some of us really took the peace & love thing seriously...some of us still do. The times were both exhilarating and disturbing. It didn't start being about sex, drugs & rock 'n' roll. As elements of outside control became more evident, it all slid downhill. Most of the so-called hippies grew up to sell insurance, work in banks and factories, and forgot about the hippie ideals. I'm glad to see they've never died out!
It's almost impossible to get the feel of the 60s in words. There was so much going on from the music to the war to Alcatraz being occupied by native americans, to the SLA robbing banks, to the underground newspapers being sold on corners with truth to power(Berkely Barb,LA Free Press, etc) like NEVER before,to thousands of like minded people hitchhiking to anywhere you can think of, meeting other hippie-types and hanging with them, doing illegal subtances, exchanging love and then never seeing them again, watching guys with crewcuts in college-type attire snapping pictures of anyone and everyone as fast as they could at festivals(Crater Festy in Hawaii). So much more. A start.
Well Mz Daisy, can't righrly speak for others however between the hot tubs and saunas and the young hippie chicks eager to get my hippie/biker bod in a tub or shower I didn't have much trouble staying clean. lol Many of the things we started still exist, recycjing centers, susicide and cricis hot lines, the biggest tree planting collective in the country (60% of all federal tree planting contracts), and much more.
I got stoned and took way too many trips but still remember those years in great detail. I can't remember what happened 20 seconds ago but hey, that's just getting old. From observing old friends who went through similar experiences but fell off the hippy wagon by replacing uppers with downers, they're the ones who can hardly remember what went on.
