Ok ive decided now that i want dreadlocks. But i dont want big chunky dreadlocks e.g. rasta styled ones. But more thin dreadlocks with an undercut.
    For the more industrial/gothic look.

I know this isnt a gothic forum ect ect. But ive been trying to research the diffrent types of dreads because. Well its a pretty big choice. And i dont want to go in and just go dreadlocks. And regret it.

Dreadlocks like that are my dream.

I have/had Really really curly hair but now i straighten it. But i mean they were like ringlets. Practicly dreads but really twirly. Does this help if my hair is curly for these kind of dreadlocks ?

What i need to know is what kind of dreadlocks they are. How to get them. Will hairdresses to them and anything like that really.

The only reason i ask is because everywhere ive looked everyone has chunky dreadlocks. Which i dont mind. But there not for me.

    Please and thankyou x

since you are looking for the fashionable uniform dreads, i suggest going into your local hairstylist and showing them that picture. they will probably twist them, rip them, do a bunch of salon shit to manipulate the hair to uniform sections, then wax the bejeesus out of them, and then you will have your instant hairstyle. make sure to palm roll daily to keep those tame and stop them from goin WILD on you!

=] thanks. Twist and rip sounds more like Hurt and Pain ^_^.

But pain is fashion =]. Thats a relief to know that hairdressers can do it.
Luckily i can go to camden next week which has all dreadlock and tube hair salons =].

How long am i looking at sitting there for ? They charge per hour do they not ?

yeah it will cost you probably 100 or 150 dollars in total, average from what i have heard online.

Twist and rip - its a sadomasochists dream!

It will probably take up about 5-6 hours, depending.

And the best part of doing it this way is your hair wont actually dreadlock, so you can comb them right out within the first few weeks when you want to go back or whatever

edit: and as long as you keep adding the wax they will stay in however long you want!

hey, dude, sarcasm is really uncool when someone is seriously asking for help with something.

stay away from wax, it'll destroy your hair. if you want to get them done at a salon, you can, but most folks here would suggest having a friend help you. it's going to be hard to get dreads to do what you want them to do, but with your hair type, it sounds as if it might be condusive to the dreadlocks you're aiming for. keep in mind that dreads will unravel and then knot up together on their own, regardless of what method you use to put them in.

curly hair dreads really well usually, and i know a lot of curly-haired people who just stopped brushing their hair and it knotted right up. and you just have to rip them apart at the roots when they start congoing hardcore.

hopefully this is helpful to you. wax is bad, stay away! :)

legitimately, this kid does not want dreadlocks, actual naturally dreaded hair, because thats not what naturally dreaded hair does. he wants to appearance of perfectly molded locks. and that is how to get htem, right?

Erm i want them like the dudes on those picture where the dreadlocks are thin.

I dont want big rock solid dreadlocks. Just smooth thin ones thats why i was asking because everytime i search for dreadlocks all i get is the big hard dreadlocks.

But i guess ill show the hairdressers they will probably know what to do

You will have to work on your hair a lot if you want small neat dreads like that. palm rolling a lot will help. from what i've seen, curly hair is great for dreading. If they get all fuzzy and messy looking (which will be often in the beginning) use aloe gel instead of wax. much better for many reasons.

dreadlocks dont have to be "naturally" dreaded to be dreadlocks. If someone backcombs their hair, do they not get to use the term dreadlocks?
I know many people with "well groomed" dreadlocks and I can assure you that their hair is actually dreaded. There are many different reasons to get dreadlocks, and fashion is one of them. Not my favorite reason personally, but I'm not going to hate on someone because they choose to look a certain way.

i'm just sick of all the judging that people do when it comes to dreads. his reasons for having dreads aren't the same as yours. whatever. that's such a stupid reason to be rude to someone.

I feel like I have to step in for a minute here. Guys please remember to be kind and provide useful information to EVERYONE regardless of their reasonings. You may not agree with it and it may not be your thing but it is obviously important to them. Especially if they get up the guts to come on here and ask you expecting wise advice. I always feel privileged to be asked and able to share what I know. There are many different ways and reasons for dreadlocks. Personally I'd want everyone to have a good experience with them if I can help it. I'm not saying anyone did go off here or anyone said anything really wrong but I can see something beginning (if we don't stop the bickering now). Why have we all been arguing lately? Maybe its just me but for some reason I see a lot of arguments around... lol.

curly hair dreads great. It should work well with your hair type. Dreadlocks for the most part aren't really named. I think what you need to do to get the results you want is to find someone who knows exactly what you are asking for. I'd just start doing some research in your area. Try walking into a shop with your pictures and have a hairdresser sit down with you and discuss it. Do you have a beauty school in your area with an open shop? Someone younger may know what you want better than some professional whos been doing basic cuts for 20 years. You can usually tell within a few minutes if they can help you or not. Just let them know exactly what you want. Ask if they use wax. Wax can be really bad for your locks. On one hand they speed up the process appearance wise but on the other hand they are detremental in the long run(for your hair). I hope we where able to help you. Read our dreadlock basics post for info on how to maintain them as well. Dreadlocks need special care when it comes to washing and we also have stuff in there on how to maintain their shape and form.

just start with small sections and backcomb/twist and rip (twist and rip is actually much less painful in my experience) then palmroll. wax isnt necessary. you can crochet the loose bits in and round the tips too if you want. its going to be a lot of work to keep them like the ones in the pic i hope you realize. anyway, good luck and dont let anyone put wax in your hair. if the wise people here cant dissuade you from using it, then make sure to apply it yourself and ony after the dreads have been made. and only a tiny, tiny, tiny little bit! but really, none is best. it can make your hair mouldy.

dude if you are in camden london, get the undercut you want (if you still want that) and get yer arse to somerset. i'll put your dreads in for you ;)
i can do thin dreads, i did mine too thin for my liking so have let em grow together. but if you dont mind seperating, and can accept the fact that they aint going to be smooth for a while then i can do em for you ;)
