Wtf? Someone deleted the threads on our Projects. There was nothing at all offensive about them, unless hippies find activism to be offensive.

Someone (who has probably been banned) suggested that we organize projects for us all to do, such as campaigns against sweat shop labour (researching sweat shops, distributing info. to stores and customers in malls, contacting companies that use sweat shop labour, etc.). The projects would be ones that we all would agree upon and work on at the same time, but in our own towns/cities. So, to revive the thread... Who has any suggestions for projects that we could do?

No one has ANY ideas? Come on, folks, what are you doing or what do you want to do? This is ACT-ivism, right?

I'll repost my idea... I've heard of people getting toy soldiers, attaching a tag or putting a sticker on them that says "Bring me home," and then leaving one everywhere they go. It sounds like something that we all could do to reach a lot of different people, and in a creative way, too.

Any ideas? If you had some posted in the deleted threads, please repost them. [IMG]

flat the tires of the vehicles of the official cars that advertise recruiting at your local recruiting center.

Eh, I dunno about that... Graffiti-as-protest is one thing, but property-destruction-as-protest is a completely different thing, and it's one of the reasons people don't respect activists. For example, there was property destruction at the IMF/WTO protests here recently, and the main thing that most people know about those protests is that protesters broke windows and hit someone in the head with a brick. They don't care what the reasons were for the protest, they just care that the protest was destructive.

But maybe we could each stand with signs in front of our local recruiting center(s) to provide people with alternative information about the military. Sort of like an individual counter-recruiting project.

Question: In my home city, there are recruiting centers in a local mall. Would I be "allowed" to stand in front of these offices with a sign? Or would that be considered to be some kind of crime, like trespassing? I know that in most protests, people tell you that you're not committing a crime as long as you stand on the sidewalk, but these centers are inside the actual building, so there's no sidewalk to stand on...

i heard about that black bloc. From what i heard hitting the person was an accident. Destruction is acceptable in some situations. Smashing windows just to smash a window puts a bad face on a protest. but anonymously flatting some tires or putting kitty litter in a cop cars gas tank is hindering an effort to restrict peoples freedoms or send them to die unjustly. thats a whole different situation.

but on another note, got any ideas how to get tags to put on toy soldiers or other methods attach the message to them. And if you've already tried this did you put them randomly just one by itself or a whole "platoon" in one spot?

it wouldnt be trespassing but maybe loitering i think you have to have a permit or something to even hand stuff out in front of wal mart. You would be run off if you stood in front of the center; yet you could intercept people as they go to be recruited, just be careful because a lot of people that go to centers are violently pro-military. Watch out and good luck.

Yeah, I assumed that hitting a person was unintentional. I figured that the person who threw it was aiming for a window, lol. Actually, I just read a blog post by a guy claiming to be that girl's brother; he said that she was out with her friends, they decided to go watch the protest from in front of an Abercrombie and Fitch store, and she got hit with the brick then.

I haven't tried the toy soldier project yet, but I assume that you could cut up a notecard, write the message on that, punch a hole in one corner of the card, tie a string through that, and then attach the string onto the soldier (e.g., onto one of the limbs). I would probably just leave one in each location. That way, if someone, such as a pro-war person, sees them and decides to throw them away or whatever, you've only lost one soldier. A whole group of soldiers in one place would probably make a bigger statement, but with pro-war people around, I'm not sure they would stay all together like that for very long... So you might be able to reach more people by distributing your soldiers throughout each location that you visit.

There's actually an NPR story online about a woman who was doing the soldier project with her synagogue; I think she said that she put stickers/labels on the soldiers, and left one wherever she went. And another group somehow attached little parachutes onto the soldiers, and threw them into the lobby of a hotel from floors higher up in the building.

Maybe I'll ask my dad about the counter-recruitment thing. He's a Republican, but he did go to law school, so he would probably know about the laws in our state. I really don't want to go through the process of getting a protest permit from a shopping mall... in TEXAS..., but I don't see how protesting without a permit inside the mall (which is probably considered private property) could be legal. I hadn't heard that about Wal-Mart, but I do know of some Peta people who regularly protest by themselves outside of KFC restaurants. They do it without a permit, and the management doesn't appreciate it, but I don't think they ever get arrested, as long as they stay on the sidewalk.

project that I see as needed attending to is cleaning up our environment. I mean I live in a small town of about 1500 people an' we've got enough trash on our streets to keep an entire herd of goats happy for centuries man. What we could do is organize work crews in our town to go out like once every month onto the streets an' clean up our neighborhoods.

If some cats went to churchs an' announced it there I'm pretty sure they could get a good crew started. Don't get me wrong man. I'm anti-religious but the simple truth is that many churchs would offer the aid we would need to get this thing rollin' man. Peace, love, an' freedom!

Picking up garbage is a cool idea. [IMG]

I don't think there's anything wrong with asking for help from church communities. You could also get help from Girl/Boy Scout troops - they're big on community service. You could even do this project on your own, in your spare time.

I saw a list of ways of incorporating anarchist tactics into your daily life (http://www.practicalanarchy.org/tips.html), and one of the ideas was to collect all the McDonald's trash from your neighbourhood and return it to the nearest McDonald's. lol.

That's freakin' awesome. lol. I would've just sat the bag by their door... that way, if someone sees you, you won't get in as much trouble. If I ever do this, and someone catches me, I'll just tell them I'm returning their lost property. haha. :p

Is there a particular point to this action, though? Or is it just to clean up litter and to protest big corporations and the McDonaldization of the world?

The big point is that by doin' this we're givin' back a lil' bit more of what we've taken from our mother man. Look at cats who smoke cigs man. (guilty) Those butts never rot away man. They just sit on the ground an' take up space. Same thing as plastic which if recycled can replace wooden packaging an' what not. So that's the point that I see man.
    peace

Couldn't you just tell us here? I have a thing about e-mailing/calling strangers... as in, I'm afraid to do it. lol.

Or is it a "double-secret" plan? 'Cause if it is, you could pm it to us.
