I am no stranger to TVP and to tofu. While I don't overdose on either of them, I have found them to be as satisfying as meat for protein.

I'll eat tofu, seitan & tempeh, because it's a meat substitute, when I want a meat substitute, or something more hearty than just lettuce and tomatoes. I never liked the taste or texture of meat, so this is not why I choose veg alternatives for meat, but those are the only three I'll eat. I really don't like to eat the pre-packaged frozen veggie burgers, unchicken fingers, etc. After you cook them, they are are slimy and gross-tasting to me. So, I refuse to eat them. I do, however, make my own veggie burgers from scratch and I love them very much. Black bean burgers or chick pea & carrot burgers. These are good. And good for you and good for the animals!

The only "meat substitute" I eat is Quorn, and I think it's just another source of protein and other nutrients. Some of it I like and some not, but I don't think of it as meat. I'm a vegetarian because I don't need to eat meat, so I don't see a need to eat animals when I have no nutritional need to. I know it's made of 'mycroprotein' and has no meat in, so whether or not it's labelled as "Chicken Fillets" I'd still eat it because I know it's suitable for vegetarians. I think tree made a good point about not eating gummy worms because they resemble real worms etc!

my mom likes the fake meats but i prefer vegetables. i eat it when she cooks it, though i'm not a big fan. sometimes tofu, but i don't see that as a meat replacement. it's definately not a staple, though.

Have you ever tried meat substitute? I had a veggy chili and when I served it people didn't even know there was no meat. Quite tasty~

I tried some vegan soy-sausages a few days ago for the first time. They were actually pretty dang good! DH had his with biscuits and gravy, I just had mine with toast... Flavorful, though, and tasty. The texture was almost too real though. Not something for all the time, that's certain. But every once in a while it'll make a good breakfast!

if i'm cooking for my husband, i'll use a few different brands. but i don't handle soy. i prefer using mushrooms and meaty style veggies. but dave grew up very meat & potatoes, so he needs that substitute, mentally. i just make up a batch for him with the fake meat and make mine without. the girls like it, too.

Dont eat meat or its by products. Thats simple enough. Eat anything that is healthy for you regardless of its looks or taste. I dont eat meat, and have not in twenty yrs. I dont know what it tastes like anymore. Abandon your subconscious infatuation with meat. dont eat it, and dont think about it, or you ll eat it again in a couple of years or even months when your infatuation with the veggie lifestyle wanes.

i know it's out of place, but my family is neither vegan nor even vegetarian. however, i've made a lot of strides in enormously reducing the amount of meat they ingest by using "fillers" like meat substitutes. it's not about making them vegetarians, it's about making them not carnivores, especially those carnivores who don't give a flying fuck what means are used to raise the meat they so desperately love. from a purely dietary standpoint, it's been hugely helpful. as for conscience based vegans, i can see perfectly well that just going ahead and getting rid of that crutch, which is a reminder every time you use it, would be hugely helpful.

Sounds like like you're in the city limits though. :)

Why not take the plunge? You'll never know until you've spent a year as a vegetarian.

omg I totally agree! theres a place called natural village
( in warminster pa if your are interested)
that has an amazing veg menu. I ate there twice and I enjoyed both times
I recomend it to people that are into the mock meat asian platters.

The first time I had vegan "beef" and green peppers it was amazing
The second time I had vegan "chicken" it also was really good

they also have really good veg soups too

( they even have vegan seaood!!!) my sister brought home vegan shrimp
its so weird lol but really good!!

    I totally recommend it

so what? for some people it's a different journey entirely. my cousin gave up entirely. she's having a crisis right now over it. people are people. what's hard for one person is easy for another.

I bought Boca's Italian meatless sausage for the first time this week. I thought they tasted great. My roommate complained about the smell so much, that I had to wait until she was gone before I could cook anymore.

    Hi guys,

some interesting discussions here :). I am vegan starting spring and was vegetarian for the past 16 years and I have to admit I actually love meat alternatives.
They may not be the healthiest thing on earth, but hey, some of them taste really good.

First time my Malaysian vegetarian friend back in the days made me a soup that tasted very much like meat - I remember I couldn't eat it.but with a bit of training - i got into it.

A question for those of you who actually doesn't like veggie meat: Do you guys just don't like the taste, or do you find it unethical as well?
Would you wear faux leather and faux fur? I think it's a bit of a same thing (I guess)

As with anything, some products are great and others are completely inedible.
