My sentiments exactly, rob If you people were real hippies, you would be in D.C. stagging sitins until the media and the politicians take notice. Do you think we left vietnam because we wanted to? No, we would still be there if it wasn't for the people rising up.
Sure hope people wake up and get mad before the Republicans completely take over the entire system. How were they allowed to raise taxes on the poorest people while getting rid of taxes for the rich?-And how did Bush getaway with this war?-When the bodies piled up during Katrina there was no protests to the administrations lack of support or any help for way too long--there has been so many resons to protest this mans way of running the country and yet it's been pretty much silent-Where are the pockets of resistance at?
I'd like to see Chuck and Rob get off their ass and head to DC. O that's right...they're not REAL hippies anymore.
You wanna be a hippie? Go and protest right now. I'm going to the regional protest this saturday, and I'm already making plans to go to the RNC convention next year. I write about peace, I voice my opinion, I try to live to the best of my ability to be as close to a hippie as i can be.
Dude, set a date and I'll be there! No, I'm really not a hippy. I was a part of the war machine during vietnam. Now that i'm older, i'm a little wiser. I was spit on and called a baby killer by hippies and I didn't even make it to vietnam. I was too freakin' brainwashed into thinking I was defending my country. No, I wasn't a real hippy. But I lived when there were real hippies and I know what they did. They weren't afraid to stand up to 'the man.' Anyway, I saw this awesome documentary on the History Channel called 'Hippies' If you get a chance, see it. It's very enlightening.
I'm going to a protest this weekend; not to be a hippie though; but its a protest against banning magic mushrooms in the netherlands and I'm properly annoyed about it. They even had a health and drugs group investigate the risk and it came out as safe and good to be legal yet they ignored it. I hope it'll be big; with a lot of people, and I hope we can make the difference there. Its set up pretty big through internet and media so I hope it'll work.
When people say to me "The hippy movement is over, get with the times", I explain that it was never over. The hippy movement is still strong. It's just the media coverage is not what it was in the 60's. The government has so much control over what the media covers, it only appears the movement is over, so people are not hearing our messages as they once had. And then when they do happen to notice a protest somewhere, they assume it's just kids trying to copy what was done in the sixties.
Your 100% right!-Some of us cut off some hair' or have kids and a home and bills to pay but nobody that marched in the 60s will forget it-I was at the Democratic Convention in Chicago in 68-it turned into a bloodbath with the Chicago cops beating the shit outa people we were fighting cops to stop a war-many places in the 60s did not want any peace rally or civil rights marches in their town and they had the local cops open up on us-with billy clubs and then guns at Kent State-We did our part to stop the war-our parents finally saw that it was wrong and thats when the White House finally sat up and took notice-it took the whole country not just the long hairs to bring it to an end- It needs to be done again and some of us are not able to do it again due to physical limitations-or other problems-getting old has it's drawbacks folks-the muscles are not what they used to be and thoses marches and sitins can be hard to do with bad limbs or bad backs-but our hearts and souls are in it 100%-and we still vote evry time it's time to do it-
I agree with the topic of this thread, in that there needs to be more Peace and Love, the war needs to stop also. I also agree when you say that the Hippies have not gone, but have just vanished from the media. I also give credit to those that started the hip forums, as a way for us all to group up, meet, talk, and keep in touch, it's a beautiful thing. Being that I'm only 18, I didnt get to participate back in the 60's, but I can, and am now, and we're all doing our part to try and stop the war, and bring back the Peace and the Love. = ].
Thank you for your service to our country. Whether the cause is just or not I support and appreciate our soldiers. My brother in law happens to be headed to Iraq for a second tour of duty. He doesn't agree with the war, and neither do we (I assume). But we don't decide whether to go to war or not...we just make the sacrifices we are asked to make and find out later whether they were justified or not.
I worked for the George McGovern for President campaign and went to alot of rallys and protests. I lived in the hot bed area of all of it-There was constantly rallys going on every day in Berkley. If the anti war groups over in Portland put together some protests I'll be there for sure-Probably be happening quite a bit as we get closer to the election.Like I said-I went all the way from San Francisco to Chicago to dodge billy clubs from the cops there.Alot of good people got their asses kicked that day by the local people who were there to "protect and serve". My parents were Democrats and I grew up being taught to question the government. When the Native Americans took over Alcatraz' my mom loaded up the car a few times a week and we took food and clothes to those people who were out there freezing on that rock for nearly 2 years-I was 15 and that was my first act of activism and getting involved and questioning authority-I was taught to work hard but don't always trust the government-local or federal -my folks spent alot of time at the local city hall and their open meetings. Grass roots efforts are a good way for anyone to get started in politics and have your voice heard-Getting billy clubbed may make it in the paper but it's usually gone by tomorro and nothing changes- It really is time for everyone to get involved and speak up against this mess of a war-how many more of our brothers and sisters will die tomorro?
Chuck-Even though I was part of the anti war movement' Me' or anyone I knew would ever think about blaming these young men and women for Viet Nam-Anyone that knows about how the brainwash techniques on the young people knows how the were able to "recruit" people for that war.-It nearly worked on me- Most Americans were smart enough to understand who the real bad guys were and who it that was keeping that mess going. One time' Me and my buddy were in England in 1970-Some idiot junky Englishman at a subway station in London started calling us dirty Yanks and worse-We were gonna keep walking until he spit on my partner-We were long haired hippys and he spit on us for being Americans-Dave decked him-right there -on the subway steps ' he went out cold! I laughed so hard- hahaha-I believe we have a duty to protect this country at all times no matter if your in uniform or not-hippy or not-there is nothing says we roll over for anyone-self defense is our right and duty-and again-thanks for your time in-we appreciate your efforts brother.
