Hi everyone, I am new to this forum. I really appreciate this place. It offers information and support which i need desperately. I have struggled with eating meat, eggs and dairy for a very long time. It makes me sick when i think about it. At the same time i like to eat organic and as naturally as possible. I don't like to take vitamin supplements and so i struggle to understand why the human race would have a b12 deficiency by not eating meats. I feel like i need a definitive answer. Has anyone else thought about this? Does anyone know the answer. Thanks for any help or advice. Ann
B-12 comes from micro-organisms. I've heard that in the past, these used to be on our foods, as we weren't as "sanitary" with our foods. Now, we go to the grocery store and buy spotless foods, cleaned of these organisms. "Neither plants nor animals make vitamin B12. Bacteria are responsible for producing vitamin B12. Animals get their vitamin B12 from eating foods contaminated with vitamin B12 and then the animal becomes a source of vitamin B12. Plant foods do not contain vitamin B12 except when they are contaminated by microorganisms or have vitamin B12 added to them." http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/b12.htm I googled that. There is a lot more on google about it.
Thanks for the info on B12. I am mostly wondering about the natural order of things, i guess. If vitamin B12 is a must for human health, then does that mean we as humasn are suppose to eat meat to get B12? It seems like the highest content of B12 is found i fish and seafood. I am trying to find a natural way of getting b12, without eating meat, taking a suppliment or eating fortified foods and i can't seem to do that??? -Ann
I still eat eggs and milk and I get it. http://www.vegsoc.org/info/b12.html thats what I found in a quick google search. I dont know what else is out there good luck on your journey.
The info seems clear about our needs. I wonder what the vitamin suppliments are made from???? Thanks for the links and info, it is appreciated.
Well you can find natural supplements at natural health stores... some supplements have really bad stuff in it that you don't wanna put in your body but I don't think there is much of that. But if you wanna take a supplement, I'd get it at Trader Joe's or Whole Foods. You can ask someone at Whole Foods about it, they usually have a whole section full of all kinds of vitamins and supplements. I think Trader Joe's is cheaper though (or I know the calcium supplements are anyway)
Fish and seafood also have the highest content of dioxin and mercury. Research a little about dioxin and I'm sure you'll prefer a supplement over fish anyday.
